ride routes 12th & 13th movember

so, some of you will remember my blog post about the team time trial down in pinjarra (see here).  well a post script to a absolute crap day on the bike arrived in the mail this week.  looks like in my haste to get home, i went through a speed camera on the freeway and have copped a few hundred dollar fine and a couple of demerit points.  time trialling is bad for you (don’t tell atta i said that).

spr t-shirts order –a few people have asked about the t-shirts as they were ordered a while ago.  they are on their way but we weren’t sure how many to order.  in the end we didn’t reach the 100 minimum so we have ordered 100 regardless.  this means that they will still be available to purchase after they arrive.  they are a one off and are manufactured on an order basis so they are not just sitting in a warehouse waiting for an order to come in.  sorry for the delay, but they will be here soon.  you can still order here.

spr kit order – much like the t-shirts, we are ordering based on the needs of the club.  there is a link here with more information.  we will close order in wednesday 15th november.  this has given everyone 2 and a bit weeks to get their orders in.  if you miss this order you will need to wait till the next order in autumn before any kit will be available.  we are not a shop so we can’t hold thousands of dollars worth of stock, just in case.  order now or wait again.  i am working on getting some new gloves, socks and booties through cannibal.  this will be a separate order after the kit, so keep your eyes out for this.

golden spokes – thank you for all the help at the golden spokes this year without it the race would not have been able to run.  there are a number of things that we will be doing next year to try to improve the event.  this involves purchasing some race equipment so we are more self sufficient.

ride routes – i think the transitional group needs a few more ride routes.  if you have any ideas of good safe roads, let me know.  on sunday there has been a suggestion that we tackle the tour de perth road circuit.  i haven’t mapped it properly but what we will do is everyone will climb brookton highway to karragullen and onto pickering brook.  from there the short course heads to kalamunda and the long course will do circuits around the observatory.  we will play it by ear as to how many laps around we need to do before heading up to kalamunda for the sprint to the finishline.  don’t forget our new coffee location on saturday and diversion to the ride route (see here).

      1. 110. not sure of the final bill as it is a work car and i have to identify myself. someone said that it will reduce once i designate a driver (it is $300 at the moment)

    1. I got one on the way down…107 in a 100 zone. No points but a $75 fine. Can’t complain though, I think I was doing about 125 when I saw the camera 🙂

  1. I wont be riding with SPR on Saturday…

I’ll be riding with TBE Osborne Park, wearing a Black Arm band..

During the week Kari Rummukainen passed away during the TDF1000 charity ride (a ride from Esperance to Perth- that raises funds for Teen Challenge). He passed away in his sleep on Saturday morning… 27 riders set off and only 26 returned- very sad. Kari is a well respected business man, family man and friend to many and will be sadly missed.

For those that knew Kari and would like to attend on Saturday- the ride leaves TBE Osborne Park at 6.15 sharp- please come along as Kari would love to look down and see all his friends riding in his honor…

  2. So sad about Kari. I came across him through work and everyone had nothing but nice things to say about him. He had a huge passion for cycling.

  3. ^Totally agree with Jason. Any support on the ride on Saturday would be more than welcome. It is a ride that has really come to grow and evolve, much thanks to the work of Kari and his never-ending generosity, and the perfect way to recognise his passing.

  4. If anyone is interested, on Sunday, I will be riding up Welshpool to Kallamunda and doing the full TdP course (pending no rain). Would love some company!

  5. “more safe rides”
    ————————

not easy in the City- still agree it might be good to explore some more options.

Tomorrow Seb and I will probably do something on quieter roads/paths. Canning, Albany etc not good for most juniors i think – esp if we get dropped 🙂

Might do the Novice Group route or similar…not sure yet.

Any other juniors welcome… as long as their guardian is attached 🙂

  6. Agree with you Snuggles – i don’t really like taking the Trans down the ‘back blocks of boganland’ rides (Canning Vale / Bannister) – particularly the 2nd half with the lumpy bits along on Albany Hwy where some are more tired than others, the group splits up, leaving a few slower T’s exposed out the back and no safe place for a re-group. Most times I end up sitting back with one or two of them at 25 kph and feeling vulnerable in aggro ute land (yes even in fluoro yellow!).
As I mentioned when this was raised before (Blog on 23/06/11) I reckon the Trans’ really only need 4 or 5 ride routes – better to have fewer safe rides where regulars know where the re-group points are and feel comfortable with the pace, than a greater variety of routes . . . . presuming that:
    – for younger / newer riders the Trans group is a learning experience before they move up to the next group; and
    – for the not so young, its their regular Sat club ride which is a bonding group ride thing with people they know and trust, knowing they won’t get dropped and that it only has a limited amount of competative testosterone thrown in for a bit of fun at the end.

  7. Lennie, since you missed out on Friday, you should also be doing Brookton Hwy on Sunday.

As for the trannies ride this morning. I would say that I am mightily impressed! We did the unusual (for transitionals group) thing of a fast roll-through onto a sprint on Shelley and it was as good as any Friday sprint. All 25 riders arrived at the regroup point within 1 minute after a 40+ kph sprint.

As for the busier Albany Hwy & Shepperton Road, we all sat together tightly at 32kph. Sure there were more cars than ideal, but as long as everyone in the group is communicating, then the group becomes one large moving mass and cars are happy to give way.

We have to remember the purpose of the transitional group. It is for the novice to transition into the main groups. It is for people to start being comfortable around cars, trucks, and changing lanes on main roads.

For those that rode with me this morning, Thank You for a great ride!

  8. A great ride indeed. Michelle is sorry she missed it (WAT training).

Will be doing the early morning lap (5:30, before a couple of the hills) if anyone is keen to join in. Pete has been getting lonely of late and I have to be at an all day WACE/TEE markers meeting by 10:00.

  9. Great ride well done to all.

Still find it hard to come to terms we were overtaken at the end of Shelley by the “One Legged Man”….just saying 🙂

  10. I’ve been riding with SPR for only a matter of months now, and I must say it is a great group of people – committed to an enjoyable and safe ride for all.

The other week I tried to step up to the main 2 group, but could not keep up – yes, i’m a bit of a slow slob. That said, any thoughts on a fast and slow transition group with the intent of the faster tranny group being to allow an “easy/ easier” transition into the main 2 (or 3?) groups?

Ok folks – have a good weekend.

    Cheers,
    C

    1. Hi Craig

There used to be a regular Main 3 group but I think this has thinned a fair bit since Main 1.5 was slotted in. If you could get enough transitional group riders interested in riding the same route as the Fast/Main groups but at an appropriate transitional group pace it could see the resurrection of a solid Main 3 group.

  11. ATTA Hilly TT for me tomorrow. Such a shame my start time isn’t just a little later. I could’ve joined the start of Sunday SPR
Don’t like missing my Sunday SPR rides 🙁
