ride routes 17th & 18th march

flying visit to sydney for me this week which luckily co-incides with my taper week for the uci race.  our office was on the 47th floor overlooking the opera house, which was pretty cool.  i guess i am getting too used to perth as i found sydney just so damn busy.  looking at the traffic through the city and kind of thought that there was no way i could ride a bike here.  i think we get it pretty good in perth for accessibility for cyclists on the roads.  putting up with the odd (or daily) moron abusing us is a little price (although unnecessary) to pay.  there are probably things i have missed in this blog, as i am a bit jet-lagged.  hopefully i can fix it up before too many people read it.

track grand prix – vip seats available.  we only have a couple of people committing to it so far so it looks like it won’t happen.  if you are interested check out the info here and put your name in the comments.

uci race or support – so, who is actually doing the uci race next week???  i looked at the start list and there weren’t that many names i recognised.  entries close tuesday 20th so don’t be doing all this training for nothing.  also, who is going to be on the hill to support us this year???  i need some volunteers to take the tent and esky along and set it up the morning of the race.  last year i had to take it all along and race as well.  kind of a bit inconvenient and i will not be doing it this year.  it would be good to have the same level of support out on the course as we did last year.

    1. Need a list of names riding so we can graffitti….I mean signwrite the names with environmentally friendly and easy to remove substances…..:P

  1. I’ll be riding in the M50 – 59 race. Looking for lots of inspiration on Malcolm St again this year (and the hill is much closer to the finish on Lovekin Drive). The crowd support and noise (and chalk) by the SPR crew made the UCI races easily the best local event in 2011; where else could family and friends come and watch and scream at their riders?

If it’s going to be hot, having someone to hand out a cold bottle would be great too.

  2. After a brief conversation with Peter, I entered the race in M45-49. Within two days reality started to displace my delusions of adequacy. Given the 3 1/2 weeks notice, no race training and with a ‘palmares’ that only includes the January RCCC/SPR Crit (D Grade, 4th…out of 5) have I perhaps over-reached for my first ever road race?

This is going to hurt… and I have no clue how to ride a race like this. I suspect ignorance will not be bliss in this case.

    1. Don’t you think that it makes it a just a bit more exciting…the fact that you have no idea what you have let yourself in for?!? I can already feel the adrenalin pumping and it is still a week away! 🙂

  3. Just signed up for the 40-44 as well. It’ll be a normal week of cycling for me and I’ll treat the event as a learning experience as well as well as a substitute for the SPR Sunday hills ride. If I can help lead somebody out let me know.

    1. When I say “lead out” I really mean “help out”. Not too sure I’m capable of helping anyone but if you’re somewhere near me during the race and you need a moment or two of drafting then just let me know.
Good luck and safe cycling everyone!!

  4. I’ve registered for the M40-44. Not as fit as last year but it’s such a great event it is worth the pain and suffering 🙂

  5. Also in for the pain fest. Sorry, not physically able to lead anyone as I usually get dropped on the 2nd lap. However, I’m happy share the pain and keep things going until the end for those that just want to finish.
    M40-44

    1. Will you share some of my pain Johnny? I’m in for the M40-44 (I know what you’re all thinking…I can’t believe that Andrew is in his forties!!)

  6. Will be doing some slower laps (3 in total) of the UCI course – same pace as a normal/proper warm-up lap at the usual 5:30 UCI ride tomorrow if others want to join me.

  7. Female 30-34 done.

If i finish, Peter Mah has to wear a bikini on the next ride as this pain will be his fault …. actually he might enjoy that and others will suffer….let me have a think about his punishment as im riding around on Sunday!

  8. I will be wearing team colours in the 50-54 category. Only other SPR name I recognize in this category is one M Bonner.
Would like to try and join you (hang on) for 3 laps tomorrow, Mike….

  9. Looks like registration for the road race has been extended until Friday …

UWCT Perth Website: “Online Registrations for the Road Race Close Friday 23 March at Midnight.”

Not too late!!! (Not going to name names but Alistair you should do it … ha)
