Hello fellow lycra fans,
Today I had a women come into the store asking me to get the word out to all bike riders in Perth to make a little less noise in the early hours of the morning when riding past peoples homes.
So if you are catching up on every days news with your mates or letting your fellow riders know the road ahead is clear please think about the people that are still asleep.
This poor lady was almost in tears.
Say it, dont yell it.
Thanks
Cathi
Enjoy the ride :)

I had thought of this, particularly on the Friday ride when we regroup at the end of Shelley, and inevitably someone has to yell out to the people who have forgotten to stop.

Perhaps we can all let out a mighty yawp whilst riding through Kings Park to let it all out.

The regroup at the water tower on Tuesdays ride is another time when we could try to be a little quieter..

I was actually discussing this very topic with a friend of mine last night, who happens to live in Applecross. She gets woken most morning by the call of “clear right”…not at all impressed.

I’m still fairly new to the whole roadie thing, so please don’t shoot me down in flames if I come across the wrong way…but surely there’s no need to shout out in a goup ride when the road ahead/left/right is clear? I’d have thought it would make much more sense to concentrate on the ride, and only shout out when a potential hazard arises? Yes, I know it adds a level of safety to a group ride (and even when there are just 2-3 riders in a bunch) but I feel (personally at least) that there is a risk of mis-communication/mis-understanding in a pack. OK, a simple “Car Right/Car Left” is required when such a hazard occurs, and the standard hand signals for hazards along the road are very useful….but there is a risk that constant chatter can also cause people to tune out and not pay so much attention.

For me, if feel that if I am starting to rely on the people in front to announce that the road ahead is clear, then perhaps I’m riding outside of my own limitations of safety and enjoyment….

Just my own thoughts,
Happy Riding!

:)

sorry, didn’t mean to offend with my chatter; i’m just over excited to see my pals, is all. Perhaps if Nick didn’t keep taking off at the front like a demented maniac leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, they’d be no need to screech at him to ease up and wake up the whole neighbourhood. So, BLAME NICK!!

mattie,
generally the call of clear right is used when we are travelling through give way intersections or round abouts. the whole idea is that you don’t need to slow down to check that the road is clear if those ahead have already checked for you. in the slower speed groups, this may not be as much of an issue, but in the faster groups, when you are entering a roundabout at speed, you like to know that it is clear, or that a car is just up the road.
don’t think of it as riding outside your limitations, rather that the rest of the group is looking out for you.

I feel really sorry for those people in Applecross, Dalkeith, Nedlands, Mosman Heights – especially living on the water front. Perhaps they could sell some stocks and use the profits to install double galzing so their time in the land of nod isnt disturbed.

Come on Toby that is a little unfair. You maybe lucky not to have a ride bunch go past your home in the early hours of the morning. I am just asking riders to be a little quite. It really isnt hard at all.
