what a weekend for cycling.  there is so much going on that it kind of makes you wonder why some of these people don’t talk to each other.  it has taken a few years, but the cycling wa calendar now goes through a detailed process to make sure that there are no clashes.  the last thing you want is people having to make a choice one week and provide nothing the next week.  generally, the dams, uci & triathlon participates are different, but there are some people (and even members of our club) that would have done a couple of these events if they had the choice.  all three events are big business, though, and i doubt they would notice a few less participants.  the start list for the dams has over 800 names.  maybe something we can build up to for the water tower challenge…

tour de perth – kicked off today on rottnest island with an 80km road race.  up against the nrs teams, andy, jono and luke managed to hang on to the main pack and finish only 37 sec behind the winner.  matty, toby and the other spr regulars finished a few minutes behind.  a time trial on the island tomorrow before the kalamunda road race on saturday and the perrty lakes race after the uci masters.  lots of racing and lots of opportunities to go cheer the guys on.

uwct perth – many months of training will culminate this weekend with the running of the uci masters race on sunday.  some spr riders will also be tackling the time trial on rottnest in order to qualify.  there will be a support team on hand on sunday, so if you are heading down to watch, look our for the spr tent.

bwa dams – many months of training will culminate with the running of the dams ride on sunday.  there are many spr riders doing either the 3 or 5 dams ride as a personal challenge.  looking at the start list, there are expected to be over 800 riders taking part.  if you are doing it, keep an eye out for other spr riders and give them some encouragement…or a push.

triathlons – besides the coorporate triathlon in the city, there is also another race in the triathlon series being held down at rockingham.  just to round out there will also be some spr members competing in triathlons.

ride routes – this saturday we will still be running the uci 6am ride just in case anyone wants a last minute easy lap of the circuit.  it will, however, be the last saturday this will be running.  also the wednesday kings park uci ride will revert back to the ciao ride from south perth.  on sunday, there will be lots of events on throughout the city.  if you are doing the 7am hills ride, please be aware that the bwa dams ride starts from the corner of coode/mill point from 6am onwards.  to access the coode st carpark, best you enter and leave via douglas ave.

    1. And yesterday at the BWA offices, there was one woman in the line (in front of me natch) who seemed to be collecting rack packs for about 1200 of those riders.

  1. Yes, I reckon that between all the big public rides that are going on this weekend, that numbers will be well down for the SPR group rides this weekend.
On the plus side, it is amazing how many riders are tackling a 150k /240k rides in the hills, compared with last year. Its all most a revolution going on……

  2. Good luck EVERYONE who is riding in nay of these events & proudly flying the SPR flag this weekend… there’ll be more than a few sore bums (& legs!) on Monday morning I’m sure. And if you can still walk, don’t forget a few of us are having a “Post Ride Re-Hydration” session at The Windsor on Sunday at 5:00pm. Go for it!

  3. Congratulations to the SPR podium peeps at the time trial on rotto today:

    Carlos DeOliveira – 1st
    Amanda Nabi – 1st
    Anna Schwartz – 2nd
    Tom Barratt – 3rd

As Tom was the fastest of the 9 SPR folk who competed today, he gets to write up the full story on the blog…..

Thanks to the SPR support crew who also kindly made the journey overseas.

    1. Well done, podium finishers, congratulations! Great effort to you too, Alison, Jerry and all the other SPR crew who made the trip across the sea under very trying conditions.

  4. Tacks under Canning Bridge – 5 Punctures in Developers
What a lovely day for riding – even five punctures in the Developers group this morning was not enough to dampen the spirit. We must have been the lucky first to go under the bridge (Raffles side) after the tacks were dropped as we picked up five punctures -we only saw one other person changing a tube for the rest of the ride around Mt Pleasant. This was my first puncture on a ride…. thanks Brett for the tube change – owe you a few coffees as the tyre was on tight.
Shaw picked up the rest of the tacks.
Last week someone put out tacks around the Shelly route and although only one puncture there in the Developers group, we did see more people than normal changing tubes…

  5. Really looking forwards to hearing of everyone’s adventures today whilst racing, be recollections of the Dams, UCI, TdP or a Tri. See you all at the Windsor in the garden for 5:00pm…yee ha!
