ride routes 30th nov and 1st dec

1479263_10202518109973065_1226481537_none of the things from the blog last week was how important our club’s ride leaders are; these are the people who volunteer to take responsibility for the group they are leading. their role is to ensure that the ride is safe, fun and inclusive. they do this by managing the pace of the group, managing regroup points as well as ensuring everyone knows what’s expected before heading out on the ride. we respect that everyone comes to ride with us for different reasons, so with a few simple guidelines and active support out on the road, everyone should have a great time. demonstrating how important our ride leaders are is captured in the weekly blog’s feedback comment from ivan (aka pricklymoses) regarding last week’s main 2 ride leaders, carlos and meg: “m2 ride with carlos and megan today was an absolute pleasure. everybody was clear what was expected of them, pace was moderated to be just right with an acceptable average of 30.5 and the two leaders were real active looking after their charges. well done guys!” as i mentioned last week, a bit of positive feedback will go a long way – how will you deliver yours?

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.

spr christmas breakfast/awards – this year the christmas breakfast will be on the 14th dec at Dome.  we have a few awards that we want to give out to the club and need your help in deciding who gets these.  please help by filling in the survey on the previous post.

criterium series – as shown in the previous post, rccc & spr are putting on a 4 race criterium series in december and january.  as well as riders, we will need some volunteers to ensure that quality racing can continue to be run in perth.  there will be a blog post up soon calling for volunteers and letting people know what jobs we need filling.

ride routes – it may be a little damp on saturday morning, so make sure that you ride to conditions and keep a focus on your safety and that of the others in the group.

ride routes 23rd & 24th november

ToMR_TTTas SPR grows & we welcome more and more people from a range of diverse backgrounds with varying degrees of skill and experience on the bike, a significant challenge is to ensure that our rides continue to be safe, fun & inclusive. we also need to ensure that we demonstrate high levels of respect for not only for ourselves and our fellow riders, but also other road users. anyone on an SPR ride (member or otherwise) needs to role model the way we’d like to be referred to by a third party. we have a great bunch of regular ride leaders that make a valuable contribution in this regard, but perhaps have a think about how you personally can make a difference too. if you see something that you feel makes a ride unsafe or possibly reduces the fun aspect of a ride, say something; preferably to the person who may be at fault. you might be surprised to find that they were either unaware of the fact that there was an issue or they just made an honest mistake. just the same, if you see someone do something great, let them know too (genuinely acknowledging the rider who throws the anchor out at the orange light, even though it means the group may disappear into the distance and they’ll miss the final sprint?). your  positive feedback will go a long way!!

weekly rides newsletter – we are trialling a new service where you put your email into the widget to the right and it sends you an email when the ride routes are updated.  give it a try and give us some feedback.  sorry for the spam last week.  it accidentally emailed everyone who has registered on the site.  hopefully it spammed some spammers.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.

ride routes – so, with no state champs, tour of margs or watertower challenge on, we should be looking at a normal weekend.  just be aware that the great perth bike ride is on this sunday, so some roads may not be accessible.

ride routes 16th & 17th november

Watertower Challenge 2013running late this week and running on stress.  it has been a busy few weeks and it culminates in the watertower challenge this weekend.  no real time to discuss anything here.  hope everyone is well.

watertower challenge – a great turnout with 108 riders registered for the challenge.  thanks also to those that have volunteered to run the event.  hopefully it is a successful day.

weekly rides newsletter – we are trialling a new service where you put your email into the widget to the right and it sends you an email when the ride routes are updated.  give it a try and give us some feedback.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.

ride routes – time to test out those navigational skills with a ride through whiteman park.  see which groups get lost this time.  my money is still on the fast group.  on sunday, we will still be setting off some of the watertower challenge riders at 7am.  be aware that they will also be there and that some of the usual ride leaders will not be doing the sunday hills ride.

why can't we all just get along
why can’t we all just get along

are we our own worse enemy??? when we are out on the road there are always risk of interactions with other road users.  whether they are cars, trucks or bus’s the odds are not really in our favour.  what about the other road users???  what about the other groups of cyclists that are also using the roads.  as we head towards summer the number of groups and the numbers of cyclists within the groups will always increase.  we make the effort to split our groups for safety reasons, but not every ride is that organised.  our interaction with these groups is sometimes just as dangerous as those with cars.  when you are in a faster group and are overtaking, make sure that you allow plenty of room before you cut back over to the left.  remember that the person you are overtaking has just received a small draft advantage from you and may now be travelling quicker than before.  also be aware of the size of your group and the one you are overtaking.  make sure that there is enough room for you to actually overtake before any traffic furniture or oncoming traffic appears.  try to aim for a single file overtake when going around other groups.  if you are the group that is being overtaken, please make allowances for the other group.  yes, you are allowed to ride two abreast, but you don’t really need to take up the whole lane.  at the end of the day, a little respect between the different cycling groups goes a long way.

state road championships – if you haven’t already heard, the state champs had to be cancelled part way through as the traffic management group didn’t turn up to close the roads.  the wash-up from this is still ongoing and we are not sure if we now have the time to reschedule the event in this year.  thank you to all the people that volunteered their time to help out on the day.  with 150 riders racing across 5 grades, it was looking to be a great event.

tour of margaret river – this weekend 6 spr teams of 6 riders plus a DOME team (and other spr riders in a few other teams) will compete in the tour of margaret river.  a three day 4 stage event around the scenic surrounds of margaret river.  good luck to all involved and well done on such a good turn out.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.

spr watertower challenge – next weekend marks the second annual watertower challenge.  we already have about 75 people registered with entries open till next wednesday.  go to the event page for more info.  with one week to go we need you to spam this out to as many people as possible.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.  we are also going to need a few volunteers to make sure this event goes well. if you are not looking at riding, please help us out.  please see the previous post.

skills cycling course – if you are new to cycling and want to get better at group riding skills, then cathi dixon will be running another 3 week session of cycle skills.  riding at a fast pace over longer distances takes more than just fitness.  developing your bike skills, especially group riding skills is very important.  see the previous post for more details.

wheels in mo-tion – as per the previous post, please support our guys that are participating in mo-vember this month.  discussions about bad mustaches are easier to have than those about health issues, but hopefully it can start the conversation.

ride routes – there will be a lot of the usual suspects missing from the group this weekend due to the tour of margaret river.  ensure you know the ride route and don’t be afraid to speak up if you think something is not right.  your safety relies on everyone in the group doing the right thing.  it is going to be a hot one on sunday, so we will look at keeping the ride close to facilities.

where would you rather be
where would you rather be

our club prides itself on a number of things and one of them is the high level of organisation.  part of that is providing the main development groups (novice thru to main 2) have leaders to look after them.  this is to ensure that the group maintains a high level of safety from risks both internal (ride skills) and external (ride conditions).  ride leaders often sacrifice their own ride to ensure that the club riders develop their skills properly as they get fitter.  to help the club continue its skill development, show your appreciation for the ride leaders by offering to buy them a coffee at DOME after the ride.  its the little things that make some of the sacrifices worthwhile.

spr kit order – the current kit order closes at midnight tomorrow (1st november).  get your order in now for a near to christmas delivery.

state senior graded road championships – thanks to those that have volunteered their time for this event.  as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event this weekend and people that have already put their names down have been assigned tasks on that post.  we are still short a lead car and a support car, so if you can help out let us know.  drivers will be briefed before the event to ensure that they know what to do.  at the moment we are looking at a 8am start, so volunteers will need to be there for a 7am setup time.  the location is Thichet rd in wanneroo.  riders will need to park on Benmunni rd and walk the 100m to the east to the registration area on Thichet rd.

tour of margaret river – next weekend 6 spr teams of 6 riders plus a DOME team (and other spr riders in a few other teams) will compete in the tour of margaret river.  a three day 4 stage event around the scenic surrounds of margaret river.  good luck to all involved and well done on such a good turn out.

ride leaders – it is in the clubs best interest to develop new riders so that they ride in a safe manner.  put your name down here to ensure the club grows to its potential.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

skills cycling course – if you are new to cycling and want to get better at group riding skills, then cathi dixon will be running another 3 week session of cycle skills.  riding at a fast pace over longer distances takes more than just fitness.  developing your bike skills, especially group riding skills is very important.  see the previous post for more details.

ride routes – with 48 spr members entered in the state champs this weekend (out of a field of 156) it may be a little light on for the sunday ride.  make sure you know the ride route and be sure to speak up if you think that the group is taking the wrong turn.  be proactive as it can save a lot of time later.

lucky we don’t have squirrels in oz. roo’s would never get stuck in your spokes.

so much going on this week (agm) and next week (state champs), and the week after (tour of margs) and the week after that (watertower challenge) etc, etc.  not getting much of a chance to scratch myself.  even the ride routes are late today after an evening meeting with the department of sport and recreation.  too busy to even complain about anything today.

ride leaders – currently there are 0 ride leader signed up for this weekend and it seems to be the same names every week.  the club needs you to step up.  put your name down here.

cycling wa agm – as members of the association, you would have received an invitation to attend the agm this weekend.  there is a lot going on within the politics of cycling and if you want to see what goes on, or have a question to ask the current board, then now is your opportunity.

state senior graded road championships – as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event next weekend and need volunteers to make it successful.  let us know if you are available to help out during the day, setting up, line judging, refreshment selling, lead/support car driving.

pink ribbon day – this coming monday is pink ribbon day which is to raise awareness of breast cancer.  if you are on the monday training ride i encourage you to don some form of pink clothing (luke already has the socks covered), but don’t forget to make a donation if you see any of the volunteers roaming around.

boot camp – get your beach body back before the weather gets hot.  free boot camp on tuesdays at 6am at the ryrie ave reserve playground in como.  run available beforehand if you are interested.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

ride routes – as a final hit out before the tour of margaret river, the all powerful race committee has requested that the margs teams be set off last again this week to see how well they work together.  the route this week, has some nice long sections that groups can work on their rolling through skills.

on of our regular riders, gary, had a bit of an incident last weekend.  his bike broke and he came off.  now this wasn’t a normal “break a spoke” or “pop a tyre” type incident.  his axle snapped inside the bottom bracket.  what you see in the picture should be a continuous shaft that the non-drive side crank arm bolts onto.  now i am not wanting a “brand war” here where people say that their groupset is better than others, but what this needs to highlight is good bike maintenance.  this may not have been an issue that would necessarily be easy to see, and may not have been 100% avoidable.  the point is that more often that you (or the bike shop) services your bike, the better chance you have of finding faults before they get too serious.  i do my own bike services but lately, with family commitments, they don’t happen as often.  i have been fortunate not to have an accident, but have found worn tyres and broken stem bolts when i did clean my bike.  even if you are not pulling the bike apart, giving it a good clean will allow you to see the condition of the slender twig of carbon fibre that is keeping you off the ground.

ride leaders – there is only 1 ride leader signed up for this weekend and it seems to be the same names every week.  the club needs you to step up.  put your name down here.

group rides – there is an article on cycling tips that everyone i know is sharing on facebook etc.  here is a link to it.  well worth a read as there are a great number of tips that our riders should understand when riding in a group.  we are a club and are doing club training rides, so we need to show some commitment to a level of organisation that other non-organised rides suffer from.

kit collection – the latest order of spr club kit has arrived.  delivery arrangements can be found on the post here.

spr drink bottles – last chance to order the new drink bottles as it will be closed on the 20th october.  get your orders in.  more info here.  we will only purchase what is ordered and will not be holding stock.

boot camp – get your beach body back before the weather gets hot.  free boot camp on tuesdays at 6am at the ryrie ave reserve playground in como.  run available beforehand if you are interested.

state senior graded road championships – as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event at the start of november.  let us know if you are available to help out during the day, setting up, line judging, refreshment selling, lead/support car driving.  or even let us know if you are racing.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

ride routes – due to the cancer ride on this weekend, we will route our rides away from the south perth area.  last year all the groups sat and waited for quite a while at the berwick intersection before we could actually get moving.  hopefully most of the riders are through by the time our groups come back along albany hwy.

nutrition on the bike is very important
nutrition on the bike is very important

not much social commentary from me this week.  the family is a lot better and i avoided the flu altogether…for now.  anna thinks that she worked out why i am riding well and my boys are sick…she thinks i am stealing their blood.  it worked on the simpsons when mr burns got bart’s blood in a transfusion, so maybe she is onto something.  i mean, if your kids needed your blood for an operation or something, you would give it to them.  if daddy needs an advantage on the bike it sounds like a fair trade.  no moral or ethical issues there right…right.

ride leaders – there is only 1 ride leader signed up for this weekend which is pretty pathetic in a club with 380 members.  the club needs you to step up.  put your name down here.

kit collection – the latest order of spr club kit has arrived and will be available for collection at DOME this saturday after the ride.  alternative arrangements can be found on the post here.

state team time trial practice – with the state team time trial on next weekend, we are holding a bit of a practice session with the teams this sunday.  meet at 4:30pm at the old peoples home carpark at the end of shelley (where we regroup on the public holiday ride) so the teams can get a bit of a ride in together.  teams will be listed on an update of the previous post, but if you are still keen, then get into contact with luke directly.

spr drink bottles – orders are open for the new drink bottles and will be closed on the 20th october.  get your orders in.  more info here.

boot camp – get your beach body back before the weather gets hot.  free boot camp on tuesdays at 6am at the ryrie ave reserve playground in como.  run available beforehand if you are interested.

south perth council elections – our own rob ramsden is up for election in the ward of moresby.  if you are in this area, vote for him so we can get a bit of representation at the local government level.  see the previous post.

beginners skills course – new to riding and want to upskill before heading out with a group???  there is a beginners course being held mid october to help you out.  more info on the previous post.

state senior graded road championships – as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event at the start of november.  let us know if you are available to help out during the day, setting up, line judging, refreshment selling, lead/support car driving.  or even let us know if you are racing.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

ride routes – this saturday’s ride will be structured a little differently after a request from the all powerful race committee.  with the tour of margaret river coming up soon, the teams are after an opportunity to get a bit of riding practice in together.  what we will do is set off all the groups as normal, then after the carpark is empty, set off the TOMR teams in reverse order.  they will still do the same course, but will ride with their team-mates.  groups should not join together if they are caught as you should be learning how well your team-mates work together.  hopefully, it means that the teams will all meet up at the coffee shop together-ish.  if any of the TOMR teams do catch up to main 3 etc, then they need to pass them smoothly and the main groups must not jump on behind.  this will only disrupt the pace of the main groups and will not make the ride safe.  this is not a race.  this is an opportunity for you to get to know the limitations of your team-mates before race day.

SPR Bottles 2013the dreaded sickness has descended upon our house and i have had two days off this week.  fortunately, i have not been sick, but the rest of the family has been suffering through temperatures of 40 deg so i have been home playing nurse.  my cycling is almost back to the level it was 2 years ago and i am pretty happy with it. strava records from 2011 are being broken and i am finally keeping up with the fast group.  it is pretty much guaranteed that i will be struck down at any moment.

ride leaders – there are only 2 ride leader signed up for this weekend.  the club needs you to step up.  put your name down here.

odd socks day – tomorrow (4th) is odd socks day. mental illness is so prevalent in australia that statistics indicate around one in two of us will experience a mental illness in our lifetime, and one in five of us will experience a mental illness in any year.  odd socks day…because anyone can have an odd day, is a light-hearted approach to reminding people that anyone, at any time, can have an odd day.  stigma can have a devastating impact on the lives of people with mental illness and their families, friends and carers. it’s still one of the greatest barriers to people seeking help and recovery.  there are people i know within the club that do suffer from mental illness, so support this cause as much as you can.  if not at work, the friday earlybird ride would be a good place to start.  any of you guys that wear the bright fluro 4shaw socks, this can be an opportunity to show off your vast collection.

spr survey – let us know what you like or don’t like about the club.  this guides the committee in making it’s decisions without having to keep asking you all the time. (there should have been a question about bottle colours).  head to the survey monkey site via the previous post.  survey closes this weekend.

spr drink bottles – orders are open for the new drink bottles and will be closed on the 20th october.  get your orders in.  more info here.

breakfast – club breakfast is on next weekend after the saturday ride.  you need to put your name into the comments of the previous post so we know how much to cater for.

armadale duathlon – for those that like to bookend their ride with a run, the armadale duathlon is on in october, as per the previous post.  spr is looking at having a presence at this event, so if you are interested, sign up and let us know via the blog comments.

ladies ride – 5:30am monday morning under the narrows cityside.  ladies ride around the river.  low key ride to encourage more girls to come riding.

kids ride – usually we have a kids ride on the first saturday of the month.  there will not be one this month for two reasons.  firstly there is the breakfast after the saturday ride, and secondly we haven’t really been getting many down to it.  if i get any feedback that this ride is wanted, we can put it on again.

south perth council elections – our own rob ramsden is up for election in the ward of moresby.  if you are in this area, vote for him so we can get a bit of representation at the local government level.  see the previous post.

nutrition survey – funnily enough, one of the results from our club survey is the average age of our members.  since we have quite a few over the age of 40, someone from the university of griffith has a survey for further research in sports nutrition for older adults.  if you are over 40 and do regular exercise, take the time to fill in this survey.

bali cycling – heading to bali???  there are options for cycling.  see the previous post for more details.

beginners skills course – new to riding and want to upskill before heading out with a group???  there is a beginners course being held mid october to help you out.  more info on the previous post.

state team time trial championships – teams of 4 (men) or 3 (women) competing to get a state title.  put your name down on the previous post if interested.

state senior graded road championships – as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event at the start of november.  let us know if you are available to help out during the day, setting up, line judging, refreshment selling, lead/support car driving.  or even let us know if you are racing.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

ride routes – just a bit of feedback from the public holiday ride this last week.  there were a few of the regular and quite experienced riders that were trying to control and split the group for safety reasons.  these were strong riders that were trying to slow the group down while some inexperienced riders were riding past them to get to the front group.  the public holiday ride is not split based on fast, main 1 etc so the front group is not the fastest and guess what, you aren’t that good.  it wasn’t until someone actually lost it and yelled at the group that people started to listen.  we split the group for safety reasons.  bigger groups get split at the lights (so people try to get through), have more trouble rolling though, and are more susceptible to have accidents.  when someone is taking control of a group, give them your respect and listen to them or step up yourself and help out.

yay, we have flags
yay, we have flags

it is the dawning of a new age with the arrival of our new spr flags.  gone are the days of cable tying banners to the tent to promote the club.  these new flags are massive, but fold down neatly into a nice carry bag.  incidentally, i now have about 6 large south perth rouleurs banners on core-flute that i need to get rid of.  if for nostalgic reasons, you wish to have one, let me know or they will probably get trashed.  it is amazing how much the club has progressed over the last few years.  we now have 380 members and i am sure we can crack 400 by the end of the year.  once oct 1st ticks by, getting a race licence means that you will have it for all of next year.  there are a few riders i know that are waiting for that date.  a lot of our change has been quite organic.  the number of groups on a saturday and even the number of rides through the week have been through identifying a need and providing for it.  gone are the days of just a few people turning up to a race and no-one knowing who we are.  even outside of racing i often get comments at work etc about people seeing our groups riding around town.  as we head into summer and the nicer weather, we are bound to attract a few more riders.  lets keep the club moving forward and getting bigger and better.

ride leaders – there is only 1 ride leader signed up for this weekend.  the club needs you to step up.  put your name down here.

uci masters – congratulations to the spr riders that competed in the time trial and road race over the weekend.  it looked like a tough day in the saddle by all accounts.  thanks to jim who has already posted his experience and we look forward to reading about the other races when they get back.

drink bottles – it is just like the federal election from 4 years ago.  too parties that look so similar that the votes are neck and neck.  shame there is no “green” option that can give their preferences to another bottle.  the poll closes this sunday, so let us know which colour bottle you prefer.

spr survey – let us know what you like or don’t like about the club.  this guides the committee in making it’s decisions without having to keep asking you all the time. (there should have been a question about bottle colours).  head to the survey monkey site via the previous post.  survey closes on the 6th.

breakfast – club breakfast is on next weekend after the saturday ride.  you need to put your name into the comments of the previous post so we know how much to cater for.

wednesday ride – the ciao ride is dead.  after battling through the cold winter and wet spring with minimal numbers, the ciao ride has come to an end.  from this week onwards, the wednesday 5:30am ride will start from under the narrows (cityside) and do laps of the uci circuit in kings park.  the sun is now up early enough to make this a viable safe option.

armadale duathlon – for those that like to bookend their ride with a run, the armadale duathlon is on in october, as per the previous post.  spr is looking at having a presence at this event, so if you are interested, sign up and let us know via the blog comments.

beginners skills course – new to riding and want to upskill before heading out with a group???  there is a beginners course being held mid october to help you out.  more info on the previous post.

state senior graded road championships – as per the previous post, we are co-hosting this event at the start of november.  let us know if you are available to help out during the day, setitng up, line judging, refreshment selling, lead/support car driving.  or even let us know if you are racing.

spr watertower challenge – it’s on again and we already have a couple of teams registered.  go to the event page for more info.  download the flyer and email it to all your cycling friends.  this is not just for spr members but open to the general public.

ride routes – it has been a while since we have had a public holiday and i’m not sure how the weather will play out this by monday, but at least saturday is looking ok.  have a good look at the ride routes for sunday as they have changed a bit, especially the short course.  also, the long and short courses do not ride together that much this week, so make sure you know where you are going.
