ride routes 18th & 19th august

so, sorry to stuart for not getting the ride routes posted early enough so that he can skip home and away.  i expect a full report on the comings and goings of summer bay this weekend.  instead of doing the ride routes, i did a very silly thing and took my 2 boys to toys r us so that i can buy a lightsaber.  they were “fairly” well behaved, but still wanted to get everything they saw, no matter what the price.  “no, you can’t get that.  no, that is $250.  no, you don’t need that.  etc, etc”  got a fancy dress birthday party this weekend, so i needed a light saber…needed.  it is for a 30th birthday, so people tend to over compensate by having “kids style” parties.  i think my 30th was a “flannelette pajama party”.

cathi dixon update – smaller update this week.  as i type this, cathi should be on a plane back to perth.  she will be transferred directly to shenton park when she arrives, and will be staying there for a while.  i will post more info when she arrives and we know more about what is going on.

collie-donnybrook – this monument of the wa cycling calendar is on this weekend.  good luck to all those participating.  it is a good experience, but one that i am glad to miss this year.  i hope that the spr guys heading down get a good handicap.

men’s night out – see the previous post here.  this event will be on next weekend, so make sure that you get your leave pass in order and your tickets to go-karting.  more info about the dinner to follow will be posted soon.

ride routes – i made a chane to the morley drive ride route for this weekend.  now it goes around herdsman and then jumps across to the back of kings park.  this cuts out the return via stirling hwy which people seemed to not like.  make sure you have a look at the route to understand where to go.  since there was no tranny or sat hills last week, i have posted the same route.  efficient or lazy, you decide.

ride routes 11th & 12th august

as many of you will be aware cathi dixon had a crash while on the spr pyrenees trip and has been under french medical care since.  some of you may not be privy to much of the information going on as it is mostly through facebook.  bill darby is just returning from france where he went to help out with her arrangements to get home.  here are a few of his posts in chronological order.  if you want to send any messages of support you can add to the comments or find her through the facebook links below.

  • 18th july – UPDATE on Cathi : For everyone’s information: I have just spoken with Cathi. She is in hospital in PAU, southern France after having a cycle crash on Monday 16th July in the Pyrenees. She has multiple injuries including a number of fractures in her upper body, concussion and other matters. She is in pain but thankfully none of the injuries are life-threatening. Medical tests are still being done (scans etc) to determine if / when she can be moved. It could be some time before it can be determined when and how she will be able to return to Australia. She is now aware of what has happened (concussion etc) and is very appreciative of everyone’s wishes, but is shocked and scared by her predicament. She is receiving very good care and has had excellent support from friends who are there. Please give her support and encouragement in the days and weeks to come. It may be a long trip back.
  • 20th july –  Cathi is doing well. She understands what happened now, is reasonably mobile for someone with her injuries and sleeping better etc. Her lung injuries are healing well but she is still in pain. I have confirmed today that Allianz Medical Assistance are planning to repatriate Cathi to Australia, hopefully within the next 7 days. The exact way they do that  is still subject to ongoing medical assessment and may be on a stretcher with nurses etc. I am going to France tomorrow to support Cathi and assist with the recovery operation. We hope to have her home by 31st July at the latest and will update you as I can.
  • 25th july – Medical review, including assessment by French spinal surgeon to be completed soon, hopefully today (Wednesday). Spinal injury is apparently worse than first thought. Other injuries – abrasions, concussion, shoulder fractures, lungs etc are healing slowly but positively. All that can be done to ensure the very best quality medical treatment and repatriation to Australia is being done. All your support and encouragement is vital and well received. No date for movement set yet.
  • 26th july – Got confirmation today that Cathi Dixon will be air ambulance lifted to Paris to receive better care than is available in the small regional city of PAU. She is likely to go to the prestigious American Hospital in paris’ inner west suburbs. This is good news. Unfortunately this may be delayed yet again due to availability of the necessary specialist surgeons at the Paris end.
  • 27th july –  Cathi Dixon is feeling a lot more confident that she will get well looked after. The staff at the American Hospital have all been very good, and have helped make her comfortable. She has been fully immobilised pending the decision on surgery. She has some tough decisions to make in the next 24hrs. Your continued support is really helping her.
  • 28th july – Cathi Dixon has had CT and MRI scans in the past two days at the lovely American Hospital in western Paris. She will see the surgeon, Professor Clemenceau tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon to decide what will be the best course of action. It will hopefully be spinal stabilisation surgery then a quick recovery before repatriation to Australia.
  • 2nd aug – Spinal surgery appears to have gone well this afternoon. She is out of recovery and in an Orthopedics ward, still off her face on morphine and sleeping well. She has enough metal implanted in her to set the airport scanner off at 50 paces…… but hopefully it has done the job to make her safe from further injury and one big step towards getting back to Perth and a “normal” life (whatever that is !!). The next couple of weeks will be long and painful but I am confident she will be well cared for in Paris. Then it’s the long trip home ….
  • 8th aug – DAY 25 (Day 6 Post Op) Cathi Dixon is recovering gradually. The surgeon and other doctor are both happy with her progress. She is walking / shuffling around now and has been out in the hospital garden in a wheel chair for the first time. AHHHH ! The healing powers of Parisian air in summer ! The staple sutres were removed yesterday and the other injuries (shoulder, ribs, concussion etc) are also progressing well. Latest estimate is that she should be Fit To Fly back to Australia on Monday 13th August (Day 30). I am leaving Paris late tonight for Australia and Mountaineering in Kosciousko National Park. Cathi will have a Private Nurse to assist her from tomorrow. Many thanks to everyone who has helped me while I have been here. Cathi still needs your love and support and is looking forward to seeing you all back in Australia.

masters state champs – held in conjunction with the pickering brook race series, the masters state champs will be on this sunday.  bit more info here.

cyclo-sportif – a couple of teams registered for this weekends cyclo at toodyay.  good luck to those that are participating.  bit more info here.

men’s night out – see the previous post here.  come along to go-karting to farewell paul o before he heads off to KL for a while.

owen – this saturday is owen’s last ride before he heads off to melbourne.  owen has done a lot of work to promote and look after the transitional type rides and was an important part of getting a transitional ride on tues/thurs morning.  he himself has come a long way in his fitness on the bike over the last year and we hope that he finds a good group to ride with when he moves.  make sure you take the time on saturday to say farewell and thank him for his efforts.

ride routes – quite a few different events on this sunday so many of the normal ride leaders may not be in attendance.  make sure you know what ride route as you may be required to step up and take control.

ride routes 4th & 5th august

super light weight race wheels

tried my best to get this post out before 7:00pm so that stuart would not have to endure home and away, but i am running a bit late.  there is quite a bit on this weekend, so have a look at the training rides below and pray like buggery that the weather holds out.  the forecast is for the wet weather to continue but as usual, occasional showers rather than constant rain.  i don’t know what is more frustrating, not being able to ride, or being teased with snippets of sunlight followed by pouring rain.

pinjarra classic – we have a few riders heading down to pinjarra on sunday to compete in the pinjarra classic.  this is one for the hills riders so mr bonner will be doing 2 laps with the a graders.

masters state champs – not ideal, but the masters state champs will be held next weekend in conjunction with the pickering brook race series.  we will put a post up later, but we are hoping to get a few spr riders out to make it a bit of a race.

focus group – this weekend is the first weekend of the month, so the focus group ride will be on again.  this is now open to kids (under 10) as it is a nice ride along the bike path to the causeway and back.  get your kids involved and come along as it also helps us out taking the therapy focus kids out.

men’s night out – see the previous post here.  come along to go-karting to farewell paul o before he heads off to KL for a while.

ride routes – lots of different rides on this weekend, but as usual, they will be dependent on the weather.  i have programmed in the river ride for saturday as if it is wet, we often combine a lot of the groups together.  if it is ok, it is the fortnightly main 3 hills ride and we also have the focus group.  make sure you know the ride route on sunday as a few people will be away at the pinjarra race.

ride routes 28th & 29th july

how cold???

so….it has been a bit cold lately.  officially (in perth city) wednesday dropped to a low of 0.4 deg with an apparent temp of -1.5 deg.  a bit further south towards jandakot, it was even colder with most of the night sitting in the zero – negative range.  on the bike it has been an experience.  i start off with my fingers freezing and my toes ok, and finish the ride the other way around.  it also takes longer to get dressed in the morning so i am always worried about missing the start of the ride.  layers upon layers to try to stay warm but the chill seems to stay with me for the first half of the day.  i even thought about bringing a doona to work just to stay warm.  the days have been nice though, but i am stuck in an office till the sun is just about to set so i don’t get to take advantage of it.

charity ride – this sunday there is a charity ride on from Frasers to raise money and awareness of cerebral palsy.  have a look at the previous posts for more information Cerebral Palsy “Big Wheelie Challenge”

pinjarra classic – the Pinjarra Classic is on next weekend with racing across a number of grades.  this is a hilly classic so made for those that do the sunday hills ride.  a number of spr riders will be competing, so come give it a go as you will not be alone.

ride routes – not much to say about the routes this week.  come and ride them.  try to stay warm by riding in a pack rather than on your own.  much like penguins do (but the ones on the outside sometimes die).

ride routes 21st & 22nd july

it’s tour time and i should be excited.  i have been waiting all year for this and am currently feeling very blah about the whole event.  not really sure what it is exactly and maybe it is a combination of things that have made me feel a little disappointed.

  1. i know cadel could be riding better.  he has won it before.  the last 2 mountain stages of the 2011 tour were awesome and he just put the whole race on his shoulders and did what he had to do to win.  just not seeing that this year and it is a bit disappointing.  not that i think he should retire or anything, but he is just not on form like last year.
  2. the course.  what is it with getting rid of most of the mountain top finishes???  are they trying to make it easier for cav???  the alps hardly even featured and when it did, there was a big descent or even worse, a HC climb followed by a 100km flat section to finish off.  what GC rider is going to attack the climb so they can be pulled back by a team train.
  3. the sterile and robotic sky team.  besides the little “faux pas” when froome dropped wiggo, they have played the team game to perfection.  possibly too perfect.  i think that i like to see my tour winners show a little emotion, whether it is aggression or suffering.  the yellow wiggle has shown neither.  the only person that seems to want to animate the tour is nibali and as i write this he has attacked on the first climb.  shame he will just be reeled back in by a bunch of aussies in wolfs sky clothing.
  4. i totally suck at our tour tipping comp.  that makes it hard to follow when your tip seems to be the kiss of death for any rider.

spr pyrenees trip – as you may know, there are some of the spr crew over in france enjoying the scenery/race/hill climbs.  unfortunately, it hasn’t all gone to plan and cathi dixon took a tumble during a descent.  there were luckily no other cars or bikes involved, but she went over the handle bars and landed on her back.  as a result she was helicopter evac’d to Pau hospital with some broken vertabrae, rib, clavicle.  she is recovering and the spr crew over there are working through all of the insurance, flight home etc. and they have been in contact with her family to keep them informed.  as i am sure that she will eventually see the blog, if you want to post some well wishes to cathi, add them to the comments below and we wish her a speedy recovery.

upcoming events – you may have seen the previous posts about the Cerebral Palsy “Big Wheelie Challenge” and the Pinjarra Classic.  these are a couple of events that the spr crew will be involved in over the next couple of weeks.  click on the links for more information and let us know if you want to join in.

tour tipping – the tour tipping enters it’s final week and there is a clear leader in the gc competition.  still anyone’s game in the other divisions so keep your tips coming.  no-one has been able to pick the more obscure stage wins so the points have jackpotted. (i am sure that is not really a word).

ride routes – there has been a request for the main 3 hills ride to be a fortnightly event.  as long as we continue to get numbers then i am happy to do this.  it may even turn into a long and short hills the same as the sunday rides.  we will see.  there does seem to be an issue with the transitional ride at the moment.  the last few weeks have only seen 1 or 2 riders show up and as such have ridden with main 3 instead.  i am guessing the combination of tour, school holidays and the cold weather has scared a few off.  winter riding = just wear more clothes.

there is only 1 jens

there is only 1 jens.  he is the cyclists version of chuck norris.  he is an animal and i don’t know anyone that doesn’t think he is awesome.  it will be a great loss to cycling when we finally retires, but he is already 40 and probably wants to spend some more time with his 6 children.

am i happy with the tour at the moment???  i’m not sure.  feel a bit let down with cadel so far back after only the 1st week.  not let down by cadel, but probably more by how much better wiggo is.  there is 2 weeks to go and anything can happen, but it looks like wiggo has this one in the bag.

i’m not actually that happy with the course this year either.  there are only 3 mountain top finishes and so the big boys won’t attack on the climbs as they know they will get caught on the run into the finish.

however, we already have a bunch of spr riders over in france.  keep your eyes out as i know that ali, jens and anna were on the main climb on yesterday’s stage.  the spr pyrenees camp will be based around the stages in the third week where we will have about 16 people over there.

spr accessories – we will see if we have enough numbers to fill an order after this weekend.  try the gloves on at the coffee shop and put your order in this weekend.  summer, spring and winter gloves and booties available.

cyclo-sportif waroona we have one team entered in this event for this weekend.  good luck to those involved and pack a jacket as it will be cold.

ride routes – not much to report on the ride routes this week.  the main groups have a nice and flat/fast route on saturday and the sunday long involves one of the longest climbs we have (brookton & peet combined).  it should be fun.  there was a bit of a challenge set last weekend to see if anyone was going to pay homage to the tour by doing the sunday double and smashing out +150kms.  no takers last week…maybe this week.

to offset last weeks post of gweneth, here is a half naked matthew mcconaughey

with the tour underway, things like sleep, family, friends and work start to suffer.  this is a common affliction but take heart that for once, the 2 hr time difference to the east coast falls in our favor.  even worse if you are a kiwi and you have to get up at 1am to watch the race.  the coverage has been excellent, as usual, and regardless of how you feel about the commentators, at least we get to see it live.  when i first started to watch the tour (way back in the late 80’s) the only coverage was a 5min segment as part of channel nine’s wide world of sport.  in those days, there was a 3 hr sports program on a saturday arvo that covered all the main sporting events.  no ipad apps or streaming footage.  just a week of cycling squeezed into a 5-10 min segment.

focus group – it is the first sunday of the month and as such we will be running the focus group ride.  if you have any kids under 10, feel free to bring them along.  more info here.

spr accessories – the orders are now open for the accessories order.  gloves and booties will be available in spr colours.  keep your fingers and toes warm this winter and get your kit matching for summer.  head over to the team kit page for order details.  orders will remain open till the end of next week.  you can try on the different style at the cafe on saturday.

tour tipping – well with the tour underway, the tipping comp is going strong.  there are 25 teams currently registered and the chase for sprint points and stage wins in on in earnest.  a winner has been picked in every stage so far as there have been no real surprises.  the team that guessed the closest time in the prologue was mine (team BumChin) but as i already have a custom bike, i will forgo the bike fitting and give it to the runner-up, team ramrod (luke ellis) who was 1 second off.

ride routes – there has been a request for a main 3 speed hills ride on saturday and the forum suggested that there may be some interest.  this group will be doing up welshpool and home via lesmurdie rd.  it will follow the saturday hills ride out to the bottom of welshpool so that the group has some protection in numbers.  we will see how it goes this week and will determine if it is to be a regular ride.

saturday 7th july

ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

early lap – spr earlybird ride

all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

development group – spr saturday 35.48km (novice shelley)

transitional – spr saturday 40.72km (mosman park)

fast & main groups – spr saturday 50.23km (ewen st)

saturday hills – spr sunday 87.99km (welshpool & observatory & camelberg & gooseberry)

main 3 hills ride – spr sunday 52.25 (welshpool) (follow saturday hills out to the hills)

ride starts adjacent to the boatshed cafe at 9:30am

focus group – slow ride with kids (under 10ish) to the causeway and back

sunday 8th july

ride starts under the narrows (cityside) at 5:30am

early lap – spr earlybird ride

all rides start at coode st carpark at 7:00am

short – spr sunday 70.93km (kahuna)

long – spr sunday 101.68km (carradine & canning dam)

ride routes 30th june & 1st july

gweneth paltrow wondering why she was getting stuck on the front doing all the work. i think a lot of the guys were having trouble passing her.

a great turn out last week at the cyclo-sportif with seven spr teams participating.  the “spr 1” team had the fastest average at around 40km/hr.  the all girls team put in a great showing as well, putting to shame some of the all guy teams they passed.

the winter solstice was last week so we are through the shortest day of the year.  it will only get better (and wetter) as we head towards spring.  pretty soon we will be chasing the sun again on the earlybird rides.  this weekend is predicted to be great riding weather with not too cold overnight temps and low to mid 20’s during the day.  i expect to see a few more on the bike this weekend.

website relocation – as you may have seen during the week we relocated the website to a different server.  when i originally set up the blog, the traffic was very low and the content was very basic.  over the years it has developed into something that is well and truly out of my area of expertise and i have had to call on some local experts in the club to help out.  we are now running on a more stable server so should see a decrease in downtime.  a big thanks to andrew, scott, michael, daniel and jordan for all their help in getting it set up.

spr survey – the survey will close off on sunday so we can collate the results.  there are already some interesting findings coming out of it and we will also endeavor to answer some of your questions.  you can find the survey here.

tour tipping comp – the tipping comp is up and running and everything is set for saturday evening when the first stage is run.  to make the prologue a bit more exciting, there will also be another prize for the team that guesses closest to the winning time.  a bike fit by PIHC will be the prize.  when you make your selection, put a time next to their name.  for those that have already put their tip in, send me an email and i will update their comment.  if you want to enter the tipping comp, you can find more info here.  the first race tips need to be in by 6pm on saturday.  the comments should close off after that time so that you can’t enter your tip.

spr accessories – the orders are now open for the accessories order.  gloves and booties will be available in spr colours.  keep your fingers and toes warm this winter and get your kit matching for summer.  head over to the team kit page for order details.

pickering brook race – race 2 of the series is on this sunday.  there are quite a few spr riders involved so you won’t be on your own if you want to give it a try.  lots of grades so there is something for everyone.

ride routes – the main route on saturday is not a common one so make sure you know where you are going.  to keep it around the 50km mark, it heads back along stirling hwy.  this is a double lane road with plenty of room for traffic to get around and should be fine as long as you stick together.  if you are uncomfortable with this, then heading home via dalkeith will add another 5kms to the route.  decide as a group which way you want to come home.  sunday we will be avoiding the pickering brook area as the race is being held.

why ride???

welcome to winter.  cold mornings are predicted, but at least they should be dry.  it’s probably about this time that you think “i wish i did order that spr jacket and longsleeve jersey.”  rug up and i will see you on the bike.

cyclo-sportif – just some info for those that are heading out to the swan valley.  i will be out there with a tent, and would like some company if possible.  especially when the others are all out riding around.  otherwise, use the tent as the meeting point so you can find all your team.  it will be inside the velodrome along the back straight.

BWA Cyclo Sportif Swan Valley – Speed Dome Midvale, Sunday, 24th June 2012

Rider information pack: http://www.bwa.org.au/file/Rider%20Pack%20Swan%20Valley.pdf

Team leaders information http://www.bwa.org.au/events/178/

Some recommendations for all participants are listed below:

  • Recommend arriving ~7.30am at the Speed Dome Midvale – earlier if you need a fix from the coffee van.
  • Can anyone participation please bring along any spare SPR team jerseys.  please put your name inside and try to remember who borrowed your jersey.
  • The ride to the start of the event is 8km and teams should gather at the Speed Dome before heading out for the start – It’s sort of escorted as the route is “meandering” so be ready & together as this aspect is a bit chaotic what with all the cyclists milling about and the team leaders rushing back from the briefing so allow ~ 30 mins to get there.
  • The 80km groups start 1st (at 9am) followed by the 64km starters, then the 32km teams. The exact Team start times will be posted.
  • They’re toilets at the school where the race actually starts but are generally busy after the 8Km cold ride from the velodrome – plan ahead just in case.

tipping comp – the tour tipping comp is open again.  proceeds from this will be going towards the uci trip so support your fellow spr’s and enter the tipping comp.  bike related prizes to be won and it can be a lot of fun.  more info here.

spr survey – take some time and fill out the club survey.  this helps us understand what you want from the club so we can plan for the coming few years.  we have had over 100 people fill it in so far but the more people, the better that statistics. more info here.

bikes, tougher than cars

crazy week both on and off the bike.  we had a garage sale on sunday, so i wasn’t allowed to ride.  watching the weather from the relative safety of the couch, i don’t think i was missing much.  however, it was pointed out that if the wind was blowing the right way, you could collect a few good strava KOM’s if you can dodge the tree branches and fallen powerlines.  i did manage to get out on both tues and thurs rides and was relatively dry on both occasions.  apart from the bike the quiz night on saturday was a resounding success and was a really good night.  i think that this may be the precursor for more social events this year.

spr survey – we have organised a survey so you can all have your say as to what direction the club should be heading.  there are questions covering everything from kit to social events.  make sure you have your say in how we run the club.  more info here.

cyclo-sportif swan valley – we currently have 5 teams and are looking at filling a sixth.  this event usually gets a good turn out as it is nice and close to the city.  it is held in conjunction with the track cycling grand prix as your entry to the cyclo gives you entry to the velodrome to watch the racing.  as with the last couple of years, we will have a tent and display at the event.  this is for a couple of reasons.  firstly to provide a meeting point for all those competing in the event and secondly to give our club a presence at the cycling event to attract new members.  if anyone wants to volunteer some time to spend with me manning the tent, let me know.  more info here.

kit distribution – the kit will be available this week at the coffee shop after the saturday morning ride.  if you can’t make it to the DOME, then contact alison directly via her email to organise a time to collect.

ride routes – after a shocking week of riding weather, it will be good to see some clean air this weekend.  make sure you take advantage of the weather and get some kms in.  kudos to leah g who apparently was the only one to turn up to the 7am ride on sunday.
