ride routes 1st & 2nd november

with the redbull air race on this weekend our usual meeting point on both saturday and sunday wil be in the restricted access zone.  this is not a concern to those that ride to the start, but the few that drive a distance to come and play with us, it will be a problem.  for this week only we will be moving the start location to just up the road at the corner of coode and angelo street.  there are a couple of car parks in the area that you can use and we will ride along angelo onto douglas and onto canning hwy to start the ride.

on saturday the coffee shop will also be in a restricted zone.  as we come down off plain st we will probably be confronted with a road block.  last year they were stopping cars, but pedestrians and bikes were still using the path along the foreshore.  we will play it by ear and see if we can sneak though, but don’t hold your breath that there will be a sprint on riverside drive.

we may have to negotiate using the tables at bells like we did last year as they had them set up for lunch time and didn’t want us to move them.  we will see.

  1. This ride looks tougher than last week’s. I decided to stay in bed last week as my body clock was still on winter time and my legs were too scared to go out (by the time I had received your reply I had talked myself out of it).
I am guessing that there are no easy weeks coming up so I’ll have to take the risk. So, should I fit the 26-tooth cassette, or should I be able to crawl up in a 39/25?

  2. hey, john. the sunday ride is not going to have climbs as steep as last week, but much longer ones. 39/25 will be fine, as my easiest is a 39/23. it is a fair slog up greenmount on great eastern hwy but managable. the main issue is that there are not as many shortcuts, but we will see how you are going after the first climb. this route stays a lot closer to civilisation so you shouldn’t get lost if you have to shorten the ride. however, you won’t know unless you give it a go. look forward to seeing you on sunday. just be aware of the different start location for this week.

  3. John,
you can join me suffering down the back of the bunch on my first hills ride in months.
    Chris
    🙂

  4. With such esteemed male company to share my pain at the back I am unable to resist… see you on Sunday boys!
(one point for getting to the coffee shop… right?)

  5. we should have our KOM points perhaps.

i’ll be in charge of making sure no mountain goats intrude on our hapless band of hill sloggers. 😉

  6. Lantern Rouge Recruits KOM points:
    10 points for showing up…
10 points for not getting off and walking…
    10 points for not spewing…
10 points for not getting lost…
10 points for managing to smile at any stage…

  7. if you guys want to have your own “group 2” kom that is fine. you just have to let me know who got what at each climb. you also have to decide who is group 1 and who is group 2 as there is going to be grey in the middle.

  8. I won’t be pushing (touching/feeling) either this time! No friends when KOM points are up for grabs! Pete, maybe just calling for people to just quickly form 2 groups (or even just a show of hands) before leaving the car park so that we can see who it is we’re up against? Self nomination (and some peer pressure) should do it!

  9. I’m going for the guy with the biggest gear and the lowest velocity award which i will personally sponsor and be the judge of
Aiming to use the 52 on every climb, we’ll see how long it lasts 😎

  10. Thanks Peter, long slow climbs are not my favourite, but I need to make a start somewhere. It sounds like I’ll be in good company and looks like the laughing group has already been formed: its still almost two days to go too!

I do have to say; I’m a bit disappointed that there wont be any touchy-feely stuff going on, but I am sure I’ll get by.

    See you on Sunday
