cyclo-sportif swan valley – team members needed.

team spr

cyclo-sportif is a participation style event similar to a team time trial.  you ride in groups of between 5-9 riders and you have to stick together.  you have to wait for the slower riders and have to stop if a team member gets a mechanical.  this type of riding is very popular for this reason as you get to ride with people you like and they can’t leave you behind.  if you have never raced before, this a great first step and many of us got a taste for it through cyclo.

this event is held in the swan valley so it is really close and easy to get to.  it starts at the speeddome in midvale but then transfers to herne hill primary school for the actual circuit.  it is a lapped event with three distances (31, 62, 78km) and all the groups ride at the same time.

this event is held in conjunction with the track grand prix which will run at the velodrome in the afternoon after the cyclo-sportif.  we have a couple of spr riders taking to the track as well as a bunch of international riders contesting the different events.  at the same time there will be a cycling trade show in which business will have their wares on show along the back straight of the track.  spr will be also manning a tent to promote the club to the cyclo-sportif masses.  this is a great way to gain exposure for the club using both the tent and having multiple teams racing.

so, what do i have to do???

well, if you are interested add your name to the comments and let us know what group you usually ride in (fast, main 1/2, transitional, development).  this allows us to match the team on ability so we can make sure you cyclo experience is as enjoyable as possible.  in the comments, also add is if you need to borrow a jersey for the event as we like to have the team all matching to promote spr.  you need to also let us know your cycling australia licence, bwa licence number or if you have no licence.

the cost is $50 for BWA members or $65 for non-members.  this extra cost difference is NOT a day licence and therefore if you do not have a licence through either BWA or CWA then you are not actually covered during these events.  as this is a participation event (like the great perth bike ride), joining a club or BWA is not a prerequisite to be allowed to compete.  if you want some level of coverage, then a recreational licence through our club at $77 will have you insured for this event, plus we have great member benefits. 🙂

anyway, when we have the teams together, we then nominate a team leader and they will then pay for the entire team.  that person will then need to be reimbursed by YOU as it has come out of their own pocket.  if you put your name down and then pull out later, then you still owe your team leader the entry fee.

so add your name to the comments ASAP as the teams need to be registered by 6pm tuesday evening.  this means we need to have your nominations in by mid monday so we can split into teams and nominate a team leader.  further info can be found here.

  1. Name: Nathan Rzepecki
    Group: Main 2
Cycling Australia: Recreational License, No. 162738

Prefer to do the 80km ride.

Ps suggest others nominate what distance they want to do also make it easy for Peter.

  2. I’m willing to ride on the flat – and risk getting hailed on – if we could get most of the guys in the photo together again for another tilt.
Mind you, the form isn’t quite there at the moment so I could just as happily ride with a more restrained/refined bunch.

  3. Pete neglected to mention perhaps the most important aspect of the $50/$65 entrance fee: that is includes a “sit down lunch” after the event!

Jen, Anna, Nigel and I (and potentially 2 others) had already put together a team for the 80km ride. I’m happy to act as financial broker/team captain for this team. There’s still a few spots left, so Pete, if you want to off load a couple of Main 1/Main 2 style riders, we’d be happy to take their money *cough* um, have them on the team.

  4. Name : Mike Tang
    Group: Developmental

Pretty sure Carol’s organising but I thought I’d just reply here.

  5. Wally or Mark did Ronan speak to you about joining us in the Swan Valley?
See prev e-mail under the ride routes for this week for the 6 already committed

  6. John Gilbertson
    Cycling Au licence No 157905.
I normally ride with Main 1 but can usually hang on with the fast guys if required, dont really care what distance.

  7. I have joined a team of friend who would ride at main 2 pace. There are 6 of us so far, so if there are a few leftovers from SPR teams who want to participate let me know. We wont be in spr kit as such at this stage, Sorry Pete

  8. Yep…I should be right for this if you need numbers.
one of the faster groups will be ok. Have Cycling Aust Licence.

  9. I’m in for the 80k. I believe Doug was already putting together a like-minded team for whom this event is really “participation” and definitely not “race”

  10. Hi,

I would like to ride with the transtional group. Jennie H. (also transitonal group) had mentioned before they were entering a team, perhaps organised by Mark(?).
Could I please go with this group, that is, if they’ll have me and they have room for 1 more rider.

    Cheers,
    Katie L

  11. Hi
I’m away at the momentment but will be back in time for Sunday, are there any places left in the transitional group?
    No licence, no SPR jersey

    Cheers/Darryl T

  13. I would be up for the Sportive…I are not able to do the saturday rides with SPR normally, so Im not sure about levels, probably a group 2 (B)? mid-high 30’s average? let me know what you think, Peter or others??
CA 164949 I will need to borrow a jersey again!
P.S I will be up for the SDCC race on the next Sat at 2pm as well if anyone else is planning on this.
    thanks, Morrison 0431996073

  14. Ronan & Katie L – you’re very welcome to join in with the SPR Mainliners (see my blog under last Thursday Ride Routes). Just need to check with Pete to see if he has allocated either of you to another team.
If you’re riding along with us then I’ll need your surnames in time for me to register the team on Tuesday afternoon.
    Can email me at
    cheers Mark_S

  15. 80km with a main 1 group or if numbers dictate, I can try and hang onto a fast group. WA License No: 161792 (recreational).

  18. You can have first dibs on my spare one Pete. What about team names calling our groups fast etc might not fit. Maybe we could use Kimbo’s Karma Sutra name suggestion ?

  19. Jordan, can we call our group “SPR Chocolat Canard” ???
Mr President, Pete Gill was looking to join Jordans team if possible and for the records my CA Licence No 164611

  24. I’ve not registered yet so still time if anyone else wants to join the fast group.

  25. Whoa those are some serious numbers there – good work. Will there be a SPR tent el presidente (or some sort of meeting point)?

  26. Jen Peter has said a few times the tent will be there.I suspect that’s why he is not riding and put a lot of effort into organising these teams.

Jen if you haven’t already touch base with Jordan as I know he registered and paid up for yourself and Anna today

  27. there will kind of be a tent there. there is a trade show on and we have a tent set up to try to capture a few more members. we will use it as a meeting point and a pick up point for jerseys for the day (which is something else i need to organise).
if anyone that is racing has a spare jersey, ca you bring it along so we can get everyone in kit for the day.

  28. Will the SPR pilates kit be on show? I have no doubt that some of the suggestions will draw in some club interest. Maybe Josh could do a live display?

  29. I think I still have a jersey – I will dig it out and hopefully remember it !

  30. 8km from the car park to the start so use these times as a guide only. Forecast for a cold morning !
