Running Red Lights

I”ve been with this club since it”s inception and one thing we pride ourselves on is being safe and obeying road rules. So I was disappointed to see 75% of the fast group this morning run a red light at Port Beach…it was red before the first rider even got to the lights. If motorists see us run red lights it only gives them online casino more reason to bitch about us. It doesn”t matter whether there are any cars around or not – safety is a habit and if you get out of the habit of being safe you will get hurt.

  1. Ditto Paul… I couldn’t agree more.
Slipping through as a light turns orange is one thing but blatantly choosing to a run red light is illegal, dangerous, inconsiderate and gives everyone else the impression that we are a pack of self-interested shits who think we are a law unto ourselves…. Don’t do it!!!

  2. Quite a few riders have been fined lately for doing it so if you have no disregard for your life by running red lights maybe think of your hip pocket…

  3. Ummm, I refute your statement, the lights were not red on Port Beach when I got there (I was the first there).. There was a green arrow to turn left.. Next set of lights was green for me, next set of lights onto stirling hwy turned orange just as I got there.. Not sure what others behind me did but I agree, blatently running red lights to try keep up is stupid..

  4. maybe if the front half slowed up for the back half to catch up after going through traffic lights, people may not be tempted to have to accelerate to light speed to make up the gap. This doesn’t justify people feeling that they have to go through a red light either.

    1. That is exactly what happened in the Main group this morning. One was left at the Stirling lights, group slowed until he rejoined on downhill to West Coast Highway. Again we left some riders waiting at the lights to get back on to Stirling highway before the bridge, and again the call was to slow up until they all rejoined.

I think that there is a bit of an unwritten rule with the Fast Group that if you are caught out at Traffic lights, puncture or are otherwise off the back, you are on your own until the following group picks you up. This should not mean that you try and hang on by running red lights etc…

It is also the responsibility of any club members in the Fast Group that see this sort of action to pull the culprits in line. If it is a member then let the committee know, repeat offenders “might” be asked not to ride with us*.

*disclaimer that this is my opinion and not that of the committee and no such policy currently exists

  5. In general I think SPR cyclists are very good at obeying the lights and road rules. I agree it’s very important to follow the rules of the road when cycling, and especially when wearing the club kit.
If you see somebody doing something wrong then let them know.

  6. This is a shame that this has to be written and riders need to be reminded. I have been left behind on spr group rides because I refuse to ride a red light. Just incase some riders are not sure. Green is go, Red is stop. Also when the group starts to roll out from the lights it is not a race. A gentle roll out is required so all riders can click in .

    1. Yes agree, you must be referring to the racing sprint off at the lights causing the rubber band effect at the back.
