ride routes 4th & 5th may

may the force be with you
may the force be with you

this saturday is international star wars day.  if you are a geek, you will understand why.  if not, then look at the date.  extra kudos for anyone that can make some dubious link between cycling and star wars this saturday (star wars undershirt, light saber headlights, full storm trooper outfit).  any storm trooper helmets will need to be approved to australian standards.

focus kids ride – this saturday is the first of the month and as such is the kids focus ride.  bring your kids down and take them for an easy ride along the foreshore.

kit collection – you can collect it from North Perth at a time that suits you, or have it posted.  See previous post for more details.

spr ladies ride – monday 6th may is the spr ladies ride.  meet under the narrows (city side) for a 5:30am river loop – thursday route but with all the shortcuts.  the group waits for everyone and even goes ahead if it is bucketing down with rain!

armadale kermesse and grand fondo – you may have heard about this event that PIHC is putting on.  catering for all types of riders as it has both a grand fondo participation ride plus a kermesse (longer criterium) race on at the same time.  although, we would like as many people to enter and support this event, we are also running the race with rccc.  this means that we will need some volunteers as well.  as we get closer to the event, we will post more info as to what jobs we need filling.

spr boot camp – a bit of cross training is being offered to keep you fit over winter.  see the previous post for details.

ride routes – nothing too outstanding this week.  nice and fast with a tailwind on saturday and a monster hill for the long course on sunday.  take advantage of the break in the weather to get a few kms in over the weekend.  for those on strava, there is a new challenge called the may massive to track who is doing the most k’s.

  1. All, on the Benara rd ride for Saturday, Bushmead road is being dug up and is about 1500 metres of either loose gravel if its dry or muddy gravel if its wet – it has at least another week to go before it will be sealed. maybe think of a detour?

  2. Good pick up Russell. I tried Bushmead on Monday – stopped, turned around and took a detour. We could turn into Kalamunda Rd just before Queens, then left into Stirling which rejoins Bushmead just after the roadworks.

  3. I agree. I did that bit of Bushmead Rd a few days ago and it was in very poor condition (even for gravel), with potholes and deep gravel sections.
As Stuart says – a detour onto Kalamunda and Stirling will take us right around to the end of the roadworks safely.

  4. Campersic!!! My favorite! Also Feralberg is brutal, just before the campersic, turn right on Haddrill Rd and up to Weir Rd. Leave your water bottle at the bottom.

  5. ooooh Campersic! I’ve driven up that and thought that would be a great descent! Might have to dust off the road bike for the Hills ride this Sunday. This one is not to be missed folks!

  6. +1 for Sato’s suggestion – to make all that flat riding worthwhile Haddrill should be attempted. It is one of the few climbs that is more difficult nearer the top, which provides for a religious experience – even for atheists. My aim is to one day keep my speed in double figures the whole way (using no less than 39 x 25). It’s so easy just to stop at 8km/hr.

  7. A couple of us will do Greenmount tomorrow then continue on via Mundaring Weir Rd, probably doing the Walnut/Pickering Brook loop +/- Lawnbrook before heading back to South Perth.

The pace will be steady/good tempo climbing (no points) with short regroups if necessary, so it’s really suitable for fast or Main 1 riders looking for a solid endurance ride.

If there is some interest, tomorrow’s ride could be a precursor to a regular ‘Trentino’ (?East Java) group (for those lucky/brilliant enough to have qualified for Trento) as preparation for the 2950 metres of climbing at the World final ~ something Sunday Papas won’t do.

    1. It is a really challenging climb, Pete – longer than the Chook or Feckenburg. The easy part down the bottom hairpin hovers around 10-11% for a kilometre or so, then it starts to kick up. There are two short but steep pinches over 18% in the second km and the last one is right at the top when you’re buggered.
Quite a few riders will need either a compact groupset or a 27 tooth cog on the back. Depending on who is in the group, there will be zig-zagging and some may have to walk up the last 100 metres if they don’t have the gears.
      You certainly earn the descent.
