If you’re keen to join in with one of the teams then please leave a comment below to state your name and the team number you wish to ride in (e.g. Joe Bloggs, SPR2).  In doing this please be mindful of the average speed and distance of each group as indicated in the table.  The distances for each group are A grade – 80kms and B grade – 64kms.

As you can appreciate co-ordinating teams can sometimes be a challenging one so please note that you potentially could be asked to swap between groups prior to registering.

PLEASE DON’T ATTEMPT TO REGISTER ON THE BWA WEBSITE UNTIL WE’VE MANAGED TO FINALISE THE TEAM COMPOSITIONS…THANKS.

Teams will be finalised by next weekend so please indicate your interest ASAP.

  1. Cancel SPR 4 (Masters). Not enough old farts available that weekend (although I could do it by myself at that speed).

    1. Despite Luke’s brilliant suggestion, I don’t think BWA allow TT bikes (+/- sperm helmets) in their Cyclosportif events. Probably to do with safety concerns: speed differences, overtaking and maneuverability on roads that aren’t fully closed to traffic etc.

      1. Hey Mike, just trawling the BWA site to see what the official vew is, it would seem it is OK provided everyone has the same type of bike (http://www.bwa.org.au/events/115/)

        8. Time trial bars
        Time trial bars are discouraged

        9. Disc wheels
        Disc wheels are discouraged

        10. Bike Type
Team bikes shall be consistent in type, that is, all road or all MTB. Tandems are accepted in either format.

        1. Not that I’ve ridden many lately, but I’ve never seen a TT bike being used/allowed in a Cyclosportif. If they’re not keen on TT bars, I think they would be even less keen on full TT rigs.

If that’s not the case, could be time to start a trend (for those that hav’em – sniff).

          1. I have. Last one I did a few years ago down at I think Waroona, I saw a diminutive young pommy girl on her full TT rig (Cervelo) giving a bunch of guys an absolute flogging as they tried to hold her wheel. Now what was her name again….oh yeah…Emma Pooley. So precedent has been set, I say you go for it and see what you can do….

          2. Special circumstances, I believe.
Ms Pooley was preparing for a little known race a few days later – one with a hill in it… What was it now…? The 2010 UCI World Titles in Geelong (where she won the ITT rainbow jersey).
Permission was granted by BWA to help her preparations – the reason she is the only ONE in the picture on a TT bike.

          3. i don’t think it matters. as long as they have your money, they won’t care.
discouraged means that they don’t want a bunch of inexperienced people swapping off turns on tt bars. it is not a race, after all.

        2. I sent an email regarding this matter earlier today.
I have received a prompt reply from Mr Jeremey Murray with words to the effect that you can enter the event with the whole team using Time Trial Bars and Disc Wheels.

          1. “Thanks for your email.

The concept of the Cyclo Sportif events is that they are community participation events encouraging people to give cycling events a go. The reason that disc wheels and TT bars are discouraged is to prevent these events from developing a perception that they are races. Timing is provided for information only and no place-getter prizes are awarded.

You are quite correct in what you have said. You can enter the event and ride a bike with disc wheels and TT bars – even though this is discouraged. I would suggest that all members of the team all have disc wheels and bars – which you have indicated is the case.

See you at the Swan Valley event

            Jeremey Murray”

        3. There you go – I sit corrected.
Just when I was thinking I might be up for the pain of riding with SPR1 (or mentally prepared for the ignominy of being dropped – and probably early).

          1. Geez, I have been tardy as a Team Leader.. Oblivious to the banter going on.. I was under the impression you could use the TT set up only if you all had TT bikes.. Same goes with Hybrids or Mountain bikes (although they may turn a blind eye if someone in your team is riding those)..

I would feel very self conscious pitching up on a TT bike at a Sportif.. I rather we all be on road bikes and see how fast we can go as a team.. 🙂

I better get on to registering SPR 1

  2. Hi Amanda, can you add miss shorty shorts Anna Massey, Alison Ramm (jet), Emma Goodwin, Nicole Sloan and a provisional Carla Martella to SPR 5 (otherwise known as the spr princesses)?

  3. My broken toe is on the mend and I’m no longer working on on the 30th so if there are any withdrawals from the girl’s team (SPR3) I am happy to fill the space if needed.

  4. Please put me in a team, either SPR 8, or SPR 7.
Or SPR 6, but only if they need the numbers, as I do not want to be responsible for Leigh’s first race loss. ;D
    Cheers

  5. Three full teams now…SPR 2, SPR 3 and SPR 5. It really is going to be a sea of green on the day :-). Yabbadabbadooooooooooooooooooo!

    1. I meant to say that the team has been set up.
For anyone joining this team, you can register yourself.

The team is called “SPR 8”

      Thanks
