ride routes 12th & 13th dec (including breakfast)

only 2 more saturday rides till christmas so we had better celebrate this one by making it our christmas breakfast.  as per the previous post, this ride will finish at jerry’s place in city beach.  if you haven’t rsvp’d yet, please scroll down till you find the previous post and let us know if you are coming.  this is mainly for catering purposes, so if you check the blog late, don’t worry, you can still come along.  just remember your $10 to cover all the food, drink and raffle prizes.  partners are welcome so you can show them who these crazy people are that are always hi-jacking your saturday mornings.

this is our second christmas breakfast as a group and as we are a year and a half old it is good to see it continuously growing.  the turn out at the joondalup race last week was excellent and a testament to what a great group of riders and support crew we have.  thanks to all that racedand helped out.  there were also a couple like scott and dave that had recently joined the club that wanted to know if we had a spare jersey so that they could ride in club colours.  podium finishes to jason and sandra as well as bec and davina made it a great (if not hot) day out.

anyway, on to this saturday’s ride.  we needed to add a few kms on as we are pulling up short in city beach.  therefore we will head south east first before cutting back towards the city.  skirting kings park, we make our way onto scarbs rd and then down west coast hwy.  to allow the fast group to work up an appetite, there will be a detour into kings park and up cardiac hill.  once we return to the ride route we will chase the main group until we catch them, then just sit in and let them dictate the pace.  another detour up the hill at ewen st before regrouping with the main group for an easy finish along west coast hwy.  dressing up or decorating your bike is optional and as it is predicted to be a hot one, i think i will give the santa suit a miss.

the novice group will do the usual ride and return to the carpark afterwards.  they will then drive to city beach to the breakfast.

sunday is predicted to be 39 degrees.  as such, i have mapped out a new route that stays nice and close to kalamunda so that there is always an easy out if needed.  welshpool and lesmurdie rd followed by the observatory.  then a new hill aroudn teh camel farm before back up mundaring weir rd to kalamunda.  a final option (depending on the weather) to do gooseberry.  bring lots of food and water.

joondalup race pack

due to the race pack being put together a bit late tonight, i have attached it below rather than emailing it out.  most of the email addresses i have for people are work ones so there is a chance you won’t get it till monday.

in the race pack is a list of other spr riders, a map of the course with a profile, a checklist of what to bring and directions of how to get to the race.  this will be our biggest turn out at an event so it will be great to see some spectators out there as well to cheer on the riders.

ride routes 5th and 6th dec

first weekend in december and the hot weather is back with us again.  a predicted max of 37 deg and i think most will be swapping the coffees for coke or one of melvyn’s specials…the strawberry milkshake.  please make sure that you are sunsmart, cover what you can and make sure you have plenty of water.

our final breakfast of the year will be next weekend (12th) at jerry’s house in city beach.  the ride route will probably be a variation on the scarbs beach rd route that finishes at the breakfast.  the group will not be splitting so there will be generally an easier pace but some regroups after certain fast sections.  please be aware that you will need to find your own way home after you have filled up on all the goodies.  the previous post has more details so make sure that you rsvp to lisa so we know how many to expect.  the following week will be the final saturday ride before christmas so that will be our “dress-up ride”, so dig out the santa suit…or satan suit if you are dyslexic.

this sunday is the cyclemania classic race up way past joondalup.  we have an outstanding amount of entries with about 25 people riding in spr colours over 5 different grades.  it is our biggest turn out yet so hopefully we can make a good showing.  either way we will make a good showing as a club through sheer numbers.

the easterly winds predicted to blow the hot air onto us make for a good run along benara rd.  the main group will take the tried and true route and cross at ascot to head along guilford rd.  the fast group will head a bit further out and come back through midland before hooking up with benara rd.  make sure you know the ride route as i will be with the main group so i still have legs left for the race on sunday.

south perth rouleurs saturday ride 08 (benara rd)

with the majority of the usual sunday suspects away racing and the weather still predicted to be fairly warm, i have posted a easier route that stays close to kalamunda.  up gooseberry, down the zig-zag, up kalamunda, down towards pickering brook, up mundaring weir rd to coffee.  see how many times you pass the coffee shop before relenting.

Joondalup City Classic – The Cyclemania Classic

team spr at the 2008 joondalup classic
team spr at the 2008 joondalup classic

the last race of the cycling wa calendar is almost upon us and this is the event that last year made us consider becoming a club.  after an average of about 6 spr riders attending races through 2008 the joodalup classic had us field close to 15 riders.  from that we have certainly moved forward and regularly have a decent turn out at events this year.  lets finish the race year on a positive note and aim for a massive spr presence.  last years race report by jerry can be found here and stuart’s not so good race report here.

the course has changed this year and it is a longer circuit at just over 20kms.  “a” grade men do 102.5km while “a” grade women and “b” grade men do 82kms (separately).  this event will also have a 61.5km women’s support race and a “c” grade men’s race.  this is a great opportunity for you to have a go at racing if you are interested.  all you will need is a recreational licence as a minimum and then you can get a day licence.  if you need more info about your requirements send me an email.

other information such as a event flyer, map and online registration can be found in these links.

entries must be in by tuesday 1st december at 7:30pm.  don’t be late and don’t wait till tuesday.

i managed to get out in the car last weekend as the boys wouldn’t sleep in the afternoon so took the trip up to see the new course.  it took close to an hour to get there from como but it is relatively easy to find as you just keep going north past the end of the freeway.  anyway, i drove the circuit with the gps on the dashboard to get an idea of the terrain.  don’t let the flyer fool you as there is nothing that even resembles any paris-roubaix type roads.  just your standard rough country roads.  don’t let the profile fool you either.  the course is not really that hilly as the total elevation gained over the “big” hill is only 50m.

add your name to the comments and we will send out a race pack next week.  we will be pitching our tent at the event and the parking area has the race pass by every lap so it is relatively spectator friendly.

sleeveless jersey

SPR Sleevelessthere has been a bit of talk about the sleeveless jersey that we looked at last year.  we originally didn’t get enough orders to make the minimum but if there are people interested we can look at it again.  we should get in quick before the weather heats up so that by the time they arrive, there will still be some summer to wear them in.

ride routes 28th & 29th nov

summer is back again this weekend and we are expecting a hot one on saturday.  it’s days like this that you wish you had a nice spr drink bottle.  i will be bringing them along to the coffeeshop again so if you need a bottle they will be available (650ml $10, 800ml $12).  after that you will need to organise a time to see me at home or work.  we also have a few kits that have not been collected yet, so i will bring them along as well.

summer weather also brings with it easterly winds so expect the ride routes to be heading home from the east for a while.  home with the tailwind has always been my preferred option, so a return trip via guilford rd will be on the cards.  the groups will split once hale rd crosses tonkin hwy and the fast group will also have to tackle ridgehill rd before they make their way home.  hopefully the road works from a couple of weeks ago along helena valley road will not hold us up much.

south perth rouleurs saturday ride 03 (hale rd)

a totally new route for the sunday ride as we will be heading out to brigadoon.  there is only one road into and out of brigadoon and it is steep.  unfortunately this means that there will be quite a bit of transition leading up to and between some of the climbs.  we still have coffee at kalamunda as we will climb kalamunda rd as our last climb.

memberships 2010

IMG_6930memberships and licences are now available to be  purchased online through the cycling australia website.  go to our membership page for details on the different types of licences.

if you are currently a member of another club but wish to change to SPR then you can do that as part of your renewal and it won’t cost anything for the transfer.  just email through your name and current licence number and we will forward it on to cycling australia (via cycling wa) .  they will then update your club and you can renew your licence as normal.

if you have moved from interstate and wish to join our club, then you will need a release letter from your current club or you will need to contact your old state cycling association and they can then inform cycling australia of the change in clubs for you.

if you have any other membership issues, send us an email and we will try to sort it out for you.

ride routes 21st & 22nd nov

IMG_6857after the slight deviation from summer we had this week, it is good to see that the forecast is heading towards some nice weather again.  a very pleasant weekend is expected so lets make the most of it and head out riding.  there are a couple of events this weekend with the state crit titles at armadale on saturday and the great perth bike ride on sunday.  we are sure to have people in each so all the best to them.

as mentioned in the previous post, all the new kit has arrived and that includes the new trisuits.  there will be a distribution on saturday at the coffeeshop after the ride or by arrangement if needed.  there will also be a distribution of the new bottles and payment can be made for them on the day.  there are limited numbers of the bigger ones so to ensure you get what you want, send your order via email.

saturday ride will be a nice familiar one with the two groups heading along south street to canning vale.  the main group return via bannister road and the fast group head to nicholson.

south perth rouleurs saturday ride 13 (canning vale reverse)

it’s been a while since we have been out to canning dam so i thought it would be a nice day to make the trip.  five climbs to tackle on this one so make sure you have your climbing legs on.  after the first one, the remainder are not too steep, but finishing up at over 100kms will mean that there will be some tired legs by the end.
