ride routes 23rd & 24th may

well it looks like the cold and wet has arrived with a vengeance but hopefully you will all take note of my cyclist creed –

“don’t look at the weather report to work out if you are riding.  look at the weather report to work out what to wear while you are riding”

someone once asked me where we were riding on the weekend.  i told them.  they then asked where we were riding if it rained.  i said the same route, only wetter.  it is a fact of life with cycling that it will not always be perfect weather.  we have had it pretty good so far this year, especially as it is only 2 weeks till winter, so grab the wet weather gear out of the cupboard and find the big gloves and booties.

saturday will see the group have a crack at scarborough beach rd.  both groups will do practically the same course except the fast group will add in a small return down to victoria street station in mosman park.  the split point will actually be after we turn onto winthrop to go around kings park, as the hill will allow a nice split and anyone that can’t hold the fast group can be sweep up by the main group.

sunday will see a few of us heading to roleystone for the state road championships.  i have kept the sunday hills ride away from brookton hwy as there will be a lot of other bike related congestion going on there.  even though it would be good to have you guys there as support, you probably won’t see much as it is an out and back course.  i have send you to john forrest national park instead, so have fun on greenmount and parkerville.  study the map well you now go through stoneville on the way to mundaring.

ride routes 16th & 17th may

with a race on at dardanup this weekend, i will be placing myself under the watchful eye of nev and the main group as i need to save what little form i have in my legs for sunday.  if you are doing the fast group, please have a good look at the map so you know where to turn when you get down towards freo.  apart from that, the route is pretty easy and should provide a good test of the legs.

the novice group has been inundated with leaders this week and rob will have some support this week when he leads them into the fray.  we have discussed a small change to the course to add a bit extra, but i haven’t mapped it yet as we need to see if it will work ok with the group.  basically, after crossing canning bridge, the group will take a detour through parts of applecross before heading out to mt pleasant and shelley.

sunday, will see a few of us in dardanup, but for those that are hitting the hills, i have mapped one that will not only give you another preview of the finish line for the state champs but also let you do both sides of the kahuna.  you lucky ducks.  if you have done a pb on teh hill climb last week, or if you do this week, send me an email and i will update the ladder.

ride routes 9th & 10th may

another fine looking weekend on the radar and it looks like winter will never get here.  the mornings are a fraction colder, but not “vest and leg warmer” type cold yet.  so lets take advantage of it while we can.  barring illness or injury, i may actually make it to a ride this weekend so it will be interesting to see how much form i have lost.

saturday will see a run up hale rd with the split happening at the start of hale rd.  from there, the main group will head home via kalamunda rd while the fast group will hop over ridgehill first.  moderate ene winds predicted so it should be a fun run home along guilford road.

the novice group was a success at it’s initial outing and thanks to julian for kicking that off.  so successful in fact that one of the girls went out that afternoon and traded the mountain bike for a pinarello.  we will try to develop that ride a bit more and hopefully it will grow into a good starting point for beginner riders.  if any of your friends, partners or work colleagues show an interest in riding but have been too afraid to go with a group, invite them along as it is pretty low key.

sunday will take on an old favourite with carrawatha and carradine followed by peet rd.  ok, not really a favourite as such, but one that we have done quite a bit before.  the state road champs are on in about 2 weeks and the finish line is on this route, so it will give people a good practice run.

ride routes 2nd & 3rd may

what the… it’s may already.  how did that happen.  more importantly i get my new bike at the end of may.

this weekend we also start something new with a novice ride.  effectively we will be running three groups all starting at 7:00am at the carpark.  the main group and the fast group will leave together as normal, but the novice group will leave separately and be doing the same route every week.  i am hoping to implement a roster system for who will lead the novice group so that one person does not “miss out” on their training every week.

the novice groups’ ride map can be found on the front page of the website.  the main group will be doing the standard benara rd loop whilst the fast group will head straight up great eastern and take a detour through midland before taking benara.  if you are in the fast group, make sure you check the map well.  we had some guys end up at ridgehill rd last time.  also look out for the shortcuts as there are a few if you get separated before midland.

sunday will see about 10 riders heading down south for the tom lowry memorial race in collie.  we have representatives in all divisions so will hope to make an impression with numbers if not results.  we will see.  for the rest, the hills ride on sunday will be a fairly standard darlington-mundaring-kalamunda loop.  there could still be roadworks in darlington, so someone better look pretty hard at the map to divert around them.  good luck, i will be in collie.

new training rides

we have added a couple more training rides to the list on the front page.

saturday morning novice ride– we have been getting a few enquiries in to the level of skill needed to ride with the group and we recognise that since we don’t have a novice group, it is hard to develop new riders.  starting this saturday, a novice group will be leaving from the coode st carpark at 7:00am.  this group aims to develop group riding skills such as holding a wheel, braking, and rolling through.  if you know of someone that may be interested, let them know.  if they want any further information, they can send an email through.

tuesday morning training ride– as the thursday morning ride is often (always) a smashfest, we have decided to make a tuesday ride available to all, not just the fast group.  this ride will do the fairly standard loop of the river (dalkeith, mosman, pt walter, applecross) and will include a number of regroup points.  this will not be a fast pace affair and will just offer another training ride opportunity during the week.  starting at 5:30am under the narrows (city side) we would aim to be back in south perth by 7:00am so that those that need to, can head to work.  lights essential.

wednesday evening spin class– for those of you that are not aware, ryan has been leading a group for spin classes on a wednesday night for some time now.  originally part of the city tri-club training, it now seems that it is primarily the spr crew that are meeting for “spin with fynn”.  starting at 6:30pm under the narrows (south perth side) and going for an hour, there is also a run afterwards for those that still pretend to be triathletes.  you will need your own bike trainer.

membership for spcc online…at last

after a few aborted attempts, it seems that the online registration for new members has finally been resolved.

if you want to sign up as a new member, before you do, there are a few things you need to ask yourself as this will determine what type of membership to get.

firstly, do you want to race???  if yes then you will need a racing licence.  if no then what i would recommend is that you get a ride senior licence.  this will offer you a bit of protection in the form of public liability insurance and some personal accident insurance.  see here for more details.  the cost for a ride licence is only $57 plus the club fee so a bit of piece of mind for a dollar a week.

so you want to race, well which licence to get.  this is kind of determined by your age.  see the chart here to determine you category.  now the tricky thing is that even though there is a masters 1 category (30-34), there are no real events for these riders and generally they are thrown in with the open field at state races.  now don’t let this worry you as it only applies to state and national races.  all other races are generally graded and you can go in b or c or whatever.  if you are not looking at competing at any state level races, then just go for the masters 1 licence as this is the cheaper option.

so you have worked out your type of licence and which category you are in so now go here and start filling in your details.

i was shown another category today and that is a KIDZ membership.  this is generally aimed at primary school kids and is a recreational licence within the junior category.  i might get one for ben, just so he has his first licence as a member of spr.  for $5 it is a bargain.

if you want to renew your membership for this year and need to change the club to spcc, then you have to send joanne at cycling australia an email to request it.  she will then change it on the system and you can just renew as normal here.  this also applies to a change in type of membership i.e. from a ride licence last year to a full racing or masters licence this year.

ride routes 18th & 19th april

a nice jaunt close to the city on saturday with the pack splitting after about 16kms.  hopefully this is enough to keep them separated, but if you are going to be in the main group, have a look at the map as i have plotted another shortcut through dalkeith to make it harder for the fast group to catch up.  hopefully we will see snuggles out on the bike again.

sunday will be hills, hills and hills.  included is another chance to make up your best time on the hill climb to kalamunda.

stay safe.
