SPR Buddy Program – October roll out

GMC-MuppetsOnBikes

It’s for every club member!

Thank you to everybody who participated in the SPR Bike Buddy Program. It was a great success! The feedback to date was fantastic. It was heart warming to hear of the support that mentors gave their buddies and how well received and appreciated it was.

We have many talented members within SPR. We also have many aspiring cyclists keen to explore their talent. The Buddy Program aims to bring the two groups together and encourage much more than just sharing a ride or cycling tips. It’s in our culture to look out for each other, so why not also share our vast experience amongst our club members while building friendships across the riding groups?

You don’t have to be an expert, you just need a little nbso online casino reviews experience to help someone. Our main groups are rich in variety just waiting to be tapped into. Each main group rider has the capacity to assist members in the slower groups progressing though.

This program rotates every 3 months. The next buddy roll out after this one will be in January 2015.

Expectations of a Buddy Mentor

The expectation of the bike buddy ‘mentor’ is to take an SPR Saturday or Sunday group ride with your buddy at least 3 times in a 3 month period. Offer advice and guidance on areas of mutual interest (technique, training or group craft), introductions to other group members, is also very inclusive.

Expectations of a Buddy Mentee

The expectation of the bike buddy ‘Mentee’ is to respect and try what your Mentor suggests and reward their time with a coffee at the Dome after a group ride. Don’t be afraid to ask those silly questions!

Coordination

We will facilitate a ‘buddy meet’ prior to the group ride at 6:45am, Saturday 27th September at the top of the boat ramp in Coode Street Car Park.

If you wish to register for this program, please do so here; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com

We will match according to gender where possible, but if you don’t mind then state that too.

SPR Bike Buddy Program needs Main 2 & 3 Mentees – 7 spots left! Register today!

Of course you are looking to improve your cycling skills, we all are! Perhaps you don’t know where to start or what to ask? Chances are your bike buddy will know exactly how to help you after just one group ride and genuinely want to help you.

This program caters to members wishing to improve in any fashion on the bike; technique, positioning or etiquette on group rides, it could open doors to racing or could even just help you understand why the hell do the things we do! Make the most of it!

The SPR Buddy Program launches this Saturday. The meeting point is at the top of the boat ramp (far right of the car park) before the usual Saturday group ride between 6:30-7am. Introductions will take place at this time, but there is no obligation to ride with your new buddy on Saturday.

I will put buddies in touch via email after the ‘buddy meet’ so you can arrange future rides.

The obligations for the mentors are to help their buddy on at least 3 rides over 3 months (ending 30 Sept). The mentees appreciate their buddy’s time with a coffee after the group ride. Easy as!

In true SPR fashion, we have had a fantastic response from mentors offering their time and knowledge. Thank you to all of you who have committed to and supported this initiative. So many fast/Main1 riders wanting to help out despite their training schedules!

Mentees please email me; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com to secure your bike buddy mentor.

Add your name, current riding group and any other information you feel relevant.

Call out for Mentees and more Mentors to register for the SPR Bike Buddy Program.

Gandhi“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Mahatma Gandhi

Nice one Gandhi! Deep! If you haven’t already signed up to become a mentor for this program, register today and find yourself helping others in your club!

If you are in training, there are always recovery weeks to allocate a ride with your buddy. It just takes 1 little ride per month x 3 that will make a x 10 difference to someone else.

See the previous SPR buddy post for more information.

The meeting point on Saturday 28th June is at the top of the boat ramp (far right hand side of the car park) in Coode street jetty car park at 6:30am. I will be sending an email to put buddies in touch so you can arrange future rides together. There is no expectation to ride with your buddy on meet day, it’s simply just to meet and possibly even catch up after the group ride. If you do ride with your new buddy, even better!

We love feedback and welcome any from your experiences while on this program.

Dip your toe into road racing!

my first racePickering Brook 2012

Before my first ever cycle race I used to think racing was about speed, tactics, intimidation and trash talk.

These days when I think of racing, I think of my first experience…it was an absolute shambles! My first race was at the Pickering Brook Series on a day with torrential winter rain. I missed the start and spent much of the ‘race’ chasing the group and swearing at myself. After a while I sat up and just laughed. I never did sample any of those other things that I thought racing was all about, although it makes me smile when I think about my introduction to racing because I shared that experience with a friend.

The Peel District Cycling Club has a great race series not too far from Perth. They are mixed gender and graded from A to E. The club is also very friendly and welcoming to anyone wanting to participate. There are a few of us going down to Baldivis this Saturday afternoon and again on the 12th July in Wandi to give it a try, so if you fancy dipping your toe in, come join us! I would love to see first timers making it to the start line (on time!) and enjoying the challenge as well as experiencing the thrill of racing in the company of friends.

If you are interested or have questions, email me; leigh.outschoorn@y7mail.com

We are riding in D grade which is 43kms. Registrations start at 1pm and racing at 2pm. The cost is $20 for registration plus a day race licence for $33 or 3 day race licence for $44. Cycling Australia are rolling out 6 month race licences from the 1st of July, so watch their website for those details and upgrade if you wish to race more often. I know you will!

Check the PDCC racing schedule to see which races suit you. http://pdcc.asn.au/racing/schedule/ Hope to see you there!

To kick start this program we are calling for riders who would like become a mentor. Shortly after, we will call out for mentees wishing to register. When this process is complete we will pair the two together based on the preferences you choose. We will do our best to meet your preferences.

This program rotates every 3 months. The first roll out will be 28th June. The next rotation will commence at the end of September.

Free Ladies Group Skills Session, this Saturday – 7th June

cycling-womenIt’s for non-members as well as SPR members!

Group riding is really fun, but for some of us ladies, it can seem very daunting. This SPR initiative is all about a supportive introduction to group riding that takes the ‘unknown’ out of your first group ride. This opportunity is aimed at those wishing to explore the prospect of group riding without the pressure of high traffic or high speed. It is also aimed at those wishing to enhance their group riding skills if you have just started out. We will cover basic group riding skills along with sharing helpful information. A road bike is ideal for group riding with SPR, but it’s not necessary for this session.

On Saturday, there will be 5 SPR volunteers helping you. They are only too happy to share what they know about cycling and are also compassionate, approachable and really friendly cyclists. The pathway forward with these new group skills will lead you straight into the Novice Group ride on a Saturday morning. You will be ushered through your first group ride putting into practise all that you have learned the week before.

Our session will not stray too far from the Coode Street car park. However, afterwards we will be all riding to the Dome in Westralia Plaza for a yummy buffet breakfast. The cost is $15 (cash only payable to & at the Dome). If you do wish to come along for the breakfast please let me know in advance for catering purposes. After breakfast we will ride with you back to the Coode Street car park. If you just want a coffee that is ok too, no need to rsvp.

We have had a fantastic response so far and look forward to seeing many more register for this supportive introduction to group riding.

Ladies Group Skills – Saturday, 7th June

IMG_2441The idea behind this session is to equip ladies who are new to group riding or who are already group riding, but are lacking in confidence, with skills and experience.

As well as basic group riding skills, we will discuss things like deciding on which foot to click out, hydration & nutrition pre, during & post rides, where to sit in a group to avoid being dropped, know when to bridge a gap to avoid being dropped on a group ride, holding a line and lots of lady things.

We will also talk about other training you can do to minimise discomfort during their initial group riding experiences. Such as core strength, fitness, muscle endurance . As well as patience with moving up the groups.

The ladies will be separated into ‘new to group riding’ and ‘members currently group riding’. They will be assigned to each other as bike buddies. This will ensure that the ‘newbies’ know existing members and feel inclined to return to a group ride.

Swan Valley Cyclo-sportif Thanks

Swan Valley Cyclo Sportif 2013

As many of you know, I crashed at the recent Swan Valley Cyclo Sportif. My injuries weren’t overly serious; Concussion, AC shoulder joint and 2 broken ribs. Unfortunately, my team mate Mat Platel hit the deck along with me. Poor Mat had to bandage himself up while I was being treated by the nice ambulance people. I remember thinking at time, what a very manly thing to do!

The conversation at the Dome, post last Saturday’s ride, suggest that details are still a bit hazy. I did bump my head after all. There is much I don’t remember. However, I do remember giving Jeremy a convincing argument why I didn’t need to go in the ambulance to the hospital. I felt I was compromising at the time with the suggestion to go later in the day. My brain was clearly unwell. According to others, I wanted to get back on the bike. I don’t remember that bit at all!

That all being said, I mostly want to say a big giant thank you to those who helped me on the day and for all the well wishes over the last couple of weeks.

Jason Gordon                    For your quick emergency response. Calling the ambulance and delegating tasks to aid in the smooth continuance of the event for others.

Justin Stephenson           For your quick presence and reassurance, rather unwelcome prodding to ascertain injury status and getting me off the road so I could go and cry in the sand J. But it is found out that claiming compensation for injury in Houston takes very little time and so any complications in the injury will be avoided as soon as possible. It is best to hire attorneys for car accidents over here!

Peter Mah                           For his super fast appearance on the scene, medical supplies and of course ferrying Jeremy with bikes back to the car park so he could meet me at the Hospital.

Leigh Bollen                       Keeping the traffic flowing.

Greg Murray                      Helping Jason put my bike back together.

Travis Kean                        Making me comfortable.

Of course my team mates who waited patiently while the carnage was cleared before proceeding to the finish line and those who stopped to check things were ok.

Thanks also to all of you who emailed, texted, facebooked and enquired about me. It meant so much and shows what a caring community SPR is.

Thanks to the nice nurse who administered the Valium. If any of you have a fall. I recommend it J

Thank you to my Husband, Jeremy. He took such good care of me… I am not a very good patient.

Thankfully I am back on the bike again and our plans to ride over some ridiculously high mountains in Italy are still on track…only 30 days till we leave!

I am one lucky SPR chick!
