ride routes 4th & 5th apr

i will be taking a “family day” on saturday and so will not be joining the hordes for the ride.  as such here are your instructions.  stick together and take it easy along shep rd, welshpool and hale rd.  once you get to kalamunda rd, the main group turn left and head back towards guilford while the fast group head straight but then turn left at the roundabout to tackle ridgehill rd.  both routes take guilford rd for the return trip so have fun coming home with the predicted tailwind.

sunday will see a bunch of spr riders up at joondalup for the peter clark classic.  we have riders in men’s a, b & c grade and in women’s a & b grade.  hopefully we will get our colours shown and start to make an impact on the perth racing scene.  if you want to come a support the spr crew, feel free to come along and cheer us on.  there may be brownies.  for anyone else, i have mapped a nice and easy circuit around kalamunda.  lots of shortcuts for an early coffee if you must.

ride routes 28th & 29th mar

we haven’t finished a ride on mounts bay rd for a while now as the winds have not been favourable.  well they are still not favourable, but they shouldn’t be too strong this saturday so we will have a crack at it.  the group will split again and the main group will take leach hwy, while the fast group will tackle south st.  about 5kms difference between the two routes so we will see what happens.

sunday will hit darlington and mundaring weir so people can try to improve their hill climb time.  sorry i have not had time to write up last sunday’s ride, but the week has been very busy.

the winter arm warmers that needed to be reprinted have arrived, so if you ordered them, get in contact with me to organise a time to collect.

the peter clark memorial race is on next weekend.  there is already talk of a decent group signing up for it.  entries need to be in by tuesday next week.  for more info see below.  it is a fairly flat course and there are various grades, so if you want to give it a go, there will be other spr riders around for support.

ride routes 21st & 22nd mar (spr autumn breakfast)

this saturday will be the fourth spr breakfast since we formed last may.  it’s the third one at my place, which will be a disappointment to some, after having the last one at jerry’s in city beach.  the ride will be fairly sedate but looking at the route, we may split and reform a few times just to let the fast boys stretch their legs.  breakfast and coffee will be supplied by lorriane and will cost $10 which includes entry into the raffle.  if you are fairly new to spr, don’t worry, this is a good opportunity to get to know the others in the group.  afterwards there will be a bike weigh-in, but i don’t think that anyone will get close to darren’s bike as it just checked in at 5.78kg.  a few home-made carbon fibre parts helped out there, but i will report on that later.

anyway, breakfast.  be there.

sunday will see a few spr riders tackle the fun (insanity) that is the freeway bikehike.  for those of you that have experienced it before and want a more relaxed ride, then we have a pleasant day in the hills planned.  four climbs with a exit for an early coffee for some and the chance for a good hill time as it is not the last climb this time.

UPDATE

if you are after a licence or need to renew your old one, jody from cycling wa will be bringing the eftpos machine so that you can use your credit card to pay.  i have all the forms that we need to fill out, and will just need $20 cash for your club fees.

ride routes 14th & 15th mar

a new route for today and one where both groups go exploring.  we will split again, and you will notice that i have put both maps on the same page.  this is so you can easily see the differences between the two routes and what potential shortcut’s may get you from the fast group back to the comfort of the main group.  with about 8kms difference, but only 25kms to make it up, i doubt there will be a catch, but it is really more about allowing the fast group to stretch their legs.  both groups need to take careful note of some of the roads that you will need to take as there are some changes from the norm.

sunday will take a nice tour around the hills in the predicted 37 deg sunshine.  make sure you have lots of water and food, but the route passes by the karragullen servo, so at least bring money.  as mentioned previously, we have started a hill climb page, so make sure you check out the start and finish lines on the page so you know where to time from.  as you can draft off each other, form an alliance with another rider of similar ability and work together to get a good time.  you very rarely race on your own, so this will be good race day experience and allows those that are not always in the mountain points an opportunity to see how they are going.

ride routes 7th & 8th mar plus inaugural meeting

good old benara road.  lots of fun with an easterly wind.  this time we will split the groups early (after 8kms) and the fast boys will have to try to make up 8km extra over the remaining 34kms that that main group will do.  is it achievable???  does it really matter.  what matters is the fast boys get to go fast and the main group gets to stay together.

sunday will see the return of the f_ckenberg.  as equally as terrifying as the chookenberg, this will test the legs as the first climb of the day.  a few more climbs to follow will make sure that any physical activity in the afternoon will result in a lot of complaining from whoever attempts the ride.

attached is the notice of the inaugural meeting of the south perth cycle club.  we have an agenda which we need to go through at the coffee shop and also attached is the constitution that we hope to adopt on the day.  have a read, and if you have any issues, let us know at the meeting.  we will also be accepting licence applications for those that need a racing licence and also if you need to change clubs.  the change of club form is also attached and as a special offer, until the end of the month, you can change clubs for only $15 instead of the normal $55.

i will soon post some information on why we think it would be a good idea to get a recreational licence through the club even if you are not intending on racing.  what it can offer you as a rider and us as a club as well as other road users.  also, if you do decide to do some racing later in the year, you only pay the difference between the licences rather than the full cost of a racing licence.  anyway, we will discuss that later.

ride routes 21st & 22nd feb

as there was some destruction of the group last week, we will split the pack this week and send the fast group over ridgehill so that they can expend a bit of excess energy.  i want the group to stay together all through shep rd and welshpool as well as hale rd.  hale is only 1 lane so we need to keep the group together for safety.  if you watched a current affair (it may have only been over here) there was a story on cyclists and how much of a menace we were.  keep together and obey the road rules.

once the group hits kalamunda rd, the fast group goes straight at the lights while the main group turns left to head back to guilford.  make sure you know the route (especially the fast group or you will be heading up gooseberry by mistake).  if by some chance the fast group catches the main group, do not merge the groups together.  last time some of the fast boys got to the front of the main group and started pushing the pace.  this made it hard for everyone as some people struggled while others then couldn’t get around to the front.  keep them separate and overtake when safe, or if no chance to do so, both groups go single file and the fast overtake the main.

on sunday, a nice pleasant ride through parkerville and mundaring weir.

also thanks to jonny and mark for writing up the rides last week.  don’t be shy and we would like to hear your view of the ride.  if you are hanging on to the back and are struggling the whole way, it is fine.  people like to read your experience.  it is not a race so there are no winners therefore everyone’s view is important.  if you want to blog, let me know.

ride routes 31st jan & 1st feb

ridge hill road.  you know you love it.  one of the few chances that we can put a nice climb into a saturday ride so why not today.  the breeze should assist the return journey and as there will be a regroup after the hill, i expect that the group should all be together once the pace picks up back at bassendean.  i added a bit more titanium hardware to my jaw this arvo and am not allowed any vigorous activity for a few days, so will be sitting this one out.  i may however, be out on course with the camera.  there is now more titanium in my jaw bone than on my bike.  i will have to remedy this soon.

the sunday ride is the “tour of the forgotten climbs” where we will climbs some that we usually go down rather than up and some never done before.  we will start up welshpool but turn off before the end and continue climbing via lesmurdie rd.  pass though bickley valley and up to the actual observatory rather than patterson rd turn off.  i nice detour to the new climb called the chook farm before up to kalamunda a slightly different way.  then down the zig zag and up gooseberry just for fun.

i now have half the new kit sitting in my lounge room waiting to be sorted and am expecting the remainder to arrive tomorrow.  as such i will be distributing it on saturday at the coffee shop after the ride.  if there is any problems (i.e the rest of it doesn’t turn up tomorrow) then i will post a note and will not distribute till later as i don’t want to have to organise the distribution twice.  however, if you do miss the coffee shop, i am still on leave so drop me an email and we can arrange a time to pick your kit up.

ride routes 24th & 25th & 26th jan

after quite a successful splitting of the groups last week, i will look at implementing that more often.  for this week though, we will go back to the “go hard then regroup” strategy as we tackle the cresswell hill in yokine and herdsman lake.

our pseudo-election of office bearers will take place before this ride and if you wish to nominate you still can.  also, we are gathering a list of riders that would be interested in joining the club so if it is you, look back on the previous post and send us an email.

sunday will attempt some nice long climbs but as always there will be shortcuts and lots of regroup points.  stu has an 11 pt lead over mike in the mountain classifications for january, with ryan not too far behind.  as next sunday is the start of a new month, it may all come down to this final weekend.

monday is a public holiday and as such there will be a ride going around the river.  the meeting point, however, will have to be up the road a bit on the corner of angelo and coode as there will be road closures in place early on.

also, starting tonight, the perth criterium series will be on with a race everyday over the weekend.  it is fast racing that is spectator friendly so i recommend that you head along and watch.  also ryan will be racing in the open men’s section (for the WAR team) and a few of our regular girls will also be out, so go and give them some support.

ride routes 17th & 18th january

we are going to try something same, same but different.  i have posted 2 saturday ride routes today but they both have similar start and finish sections.  we are looking at splitting early this week and the fast boys will turn off early onto north lake rd and head down route 16 while the main group will continue down to stock rd and do route 13.  there is about 5km difference between the two routes, but if you opt to be in with the fast boys, then make sure you know the way as we won’t be stopping.  the main group will need some leaders and i would appreciate some people putting up their hand early and responding to this post to say you will lead the way.  the main group will be doing a fairly standard ride that almost everyone should know and it is up to them to organise some roll throughs and set the pace.  we will see how this goes and if successful, i will look at building some more routes that follow this format.

sunday, as always, will involve hills.

ride routes 10th & 11th jan

sorry, sorry, sorry.  i totally forgot what day it was and should have posted the ride routes last night.  i have extended my baby leave for another 3 weeks so i will probably forget again during this period.

anyway, saturday will see us try to get stuck behind slow moving heavy machinery again on hale rd.  we will split into two groups again once we hit welshpool rd with the fast group doing an extra 5kms team time trial to try to catch the rest of the group.  i will endeavour to bring the hats to the coffee shop this weekend, so if you have not collected, or if you want to buy some spares ($10 each) for the family, then see me after the ride.

sunday is predicted to be 38 degrees and as such we will keep the route close to home with lots of options for an early exit.  only three categorised climbs but the trick is being able to ride past the coffee shop twice and keep going.  i think the temperature will be the deciding factor.
