spr water tower challenge 2015 – 25th oct

20150802114806Watertower_Challenge_Banner_2015b

its on again.  the 2015 watertower challenge will be held on sunday 25th october and will navigate around the high points of perth city.

whether it is the metric century (100 kms) or the imperial century (100 miles) there is a challenge for you and your mates.  form a team of three (3) and start training now.

feedzones and sag wagon will be provided to help you complete the challenge.

visit the events page for more information and a link to registration.

2014 spr watertower challenge

Watertower Challenge 2013the spr watertower challenge is on again in three weeks time.  put together a team of 3 riders and sign up for the metric (100km) or imperial (160km) century.

the challenge takes in the suburbs of perth so you are never really to far from home or facilities.  there will be feedzones along the way to keep you going plus a sag wagon in case you can’t.

the challenge is in both the distance covered, as well as testing your navigation skills.  a gps enabled bike computer will certainly help.

the challenge is open to both members and non-members so feel free to pass this onto all your friends.

more info can be found on the events page including a link to registration, maps and a faq.

a number of volunteers will also be needed to ensure the day goes smoothly, please email the club if you can help. (3 @ rego, 4 @ 1st feedzone, 2 @ 2nd feedzone, 1 sag wagon).

spr watertower challenge 2013

Watertower Challenge 2013 Bannerremember all the fun you had last year on the watertower challenge???  well we are running it again and this time we are welcoming people outside the club.  there is already a webpage setup with registration, a facebook event and even a strava “club”.

there will be only a few volunteers needed on the day, so what we need from the members (besides entering the event) is to promote this to all their cycling buddies outside of the club. it will be held on the 17th nov which is one week before the great perth bike ride.  this will be a good warmup event for those doing that event as you can go your own pace.  it also sits somewhere between the great perth bike ride and the 3-5 dams ride as far as difficulty.  A further benefit is that it doesn’t leave the perth city limits, so you are really never very far from home.

SPR Watertower Challenge 2013

click the link above to download the poster.  if you can email this out to your friends and post it on work bulletin boards it would be great.  not sure just how many people we will get at the event, but we would like to turn this into a regular event to provide a pathway for people into an organised club.

water tower challenge – feedback

as i have mentioned, this was a test event for the club to see how well we can run an open participation event.  for those that participated, volunteered, or even just took photos, i would like you to have a think about what worked and what we need to work on.  this includes, the course, the navigation, the provided directions, feedzones, distance, team size, finish location, time of day and anything else you can think of.

i am after feedback, both positive and negative so we can make this event better.  the intent is to open it up to the public in the future and maybe act as a conduit to get more people into the club.  again, it is a challenge, not a race, so people come into it with different expectations.  were yours met???  please add your feedback to the comments below or send me an email if you want to leave less public feedback.  thanks.

water tower volunteers

so the water tower challenge is on next weekend and we are looking for volunteers to man the feedzones.  there are four main areas that need help, but as the event progresses, some people can move on from one spot to the next.

  1. start line – 4 people (due to size of the tent)
    1. set up tent, banners, start lists, maps
    2. register teams and hand out race stickers (for helmet)
    3. start teams according to the start times
    4. pack up tent, etc after last team is away
  2. feedzone 01 (60kms) – 4 people (due to size of the tent)
    1. set up tent, banners, table, food, drink.
    2. check off teams as they come through the feedzone
    3. hand out food and drink
    4. pack up tent, etc after last team has passed
  3. feedzone 02 (110km) – 2 people (due to size of tent)
    1. set up tent, banners, table, food, drink.
    2. check off teams as they come through the feedzone
    3. hand out food and drink
    4. pack up tent, etc after last team has passed
  4. finish line – 2 people (set up at DOME)
    1. check off teams as they finish
    2. hand out coffee/drink vouchers
    3. provide computer for people to download to STRAVA
    4. congratulate teams as on a job well done

so there you have it.  the jobs are not that strenuous and the main aim is to ensure that each of the teams have passed and have been offered their food/drink.  it is envisioned that some of the start line volunteers can head to feedzone 01 after all the teams have started.  We have a volunteer who lives close to the vines that can man feedzone 02, but he will need a buddy.  put your name into the comments to let me know if you can volunteer and what you will be capable of doing.  thanks for making an event like this possible.

volunteer list

  1. rob ramsden – sag wagon (start but probably based at feedzone 01 during the event)
  2. shane white (start/feedzone 01)
  3. keith mcgowan (start/feedzone 01)
  4. david hitchcock (feedzone 02)
  5. jonny & lennie (feedzone 02)
  6. giles & helen (feedzone 01)
  7. emma goodwin (start/feedzone 01)

water tower challenge – 23rd sept

water tower number 6 on the challenge

save the date.  sunday 23rd september 2012.

this will be our inaugural water tower challenge event open to any wa club member with at least a recreational licence. there will be two challenges offered a “metric century” and an “imperial century”.  both courses will traverse perth and visit a number of water towers in the area.  “why the water towers” you ask?  well, they are usually on top of hills, so it makes it a bit more of a challenge.  however, we are not going out to the hills, so the climbs aren’t much more that what we do on a saturday morning ride.

the format will be similar to the dams ride with teams of three sticking together for the entire ride.  teams will be set off at intervals, but with traffic rules being followed, we are aware that some groups may catch others.  it is in your best interest not to drag another group around and we want to avoid a big peloton as some of the roads will be safer as a small group going single file.

the course is not direct and must be followed exactly.  to ensure that the route is followed, at least one member must have a gps device and a strava account.  the team will download to strava after the event and the final “leaderboard” can be established.  having a gps that shows the route will be a bonus as the route will not be marked, but we will issue some maps for those that do not.

bearing in mind that this is a challenge and not a race so there may be some social incentives as well.  for example, a team photo at each tower may give you bonus time.

the routes are being finalised, but the imperial century (160kms) will take in suburbs from coolbellup to joondalup and across to the vines.  the metric century (100kms) will also go as far south as coolbellup but only go as far north as alexander heights.

there will be a fee charged for the event and this will cover a couple of feed zones along the way.  currently there is one at 60kms and one at about 110kms.

we will also need a number of volunteers for the day to cover things like setup, drink stops and sag wagon.  add to the comments if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions about the event.
